(De)constructing Gender for the Quantification of Health Inequalities (Emily Mena)
Duration: 01.07.2017 - 01.12.2023
Description
This cumulative dissertation examines how unpaid care work and socially constructed gender roles contribute to health inequalities in Germany. Drawing on feminist perspectives of equality, difference and deconstruction, it develops a conceptual framework, reviews the operationalisation of intersectionality and sex/gender in quantitative health research, and proposes analytical strategies, including an ‘Intersectional Gender Score’, using population-based data. The findings highlight the importance of mechanism-related sex/gender variables and show how gender-transformative health reporting can support more equal health opportunities in the population.
