National model curriculum for interprofessional collaboration and communication

Duration: 01.08.2016 - 31.07.2018
Project Partner: Frau Prof. Dr. Jana Jünger vom Institut für medizinische und pharmazeutische Prüfungsfragen (IMPP) in Mainz
Funding: Robert-Bosch-Stiftung

Description

Project structure
The overall project is headed by Prof. Dr. Jana Jünger from the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (IMPP) in Mainz. The IPP is a cooperation partner and member of the steering group.

Context
International studies show that successful interprofessional collaboration between the professional groups involved in healthcare can significantly improve patient outcomes. Interprofessional communication plays a key role in this. Despite proven positive effects, training in the healthcare professions is predominantly organized on a mono-professional basis. Approaches to strengthening communicative-interactive skills and teamwork can already be found in the training and examination regulations for the nursing and therapy professions. Interprofessional training is not yet mandatory in medical studies.

The project is also relevant due to the implementation recommendations made as part of the National Cancer Plan for goal 12a (II) for the focus on interprofessional communication.

Aim of the project
The aim of the project is to develop a scientifically evaluated, longitudinal model curriculum of interprofessional cooperation and communication for medical studies. Parallel to this, recommendations for the qualification of teaching staff and for helpful structures at the institutions will be developed. In a second step, coordinated examination concepts (for the oral and written medical state examinations) will be developed. The model curriculum is primarily aimed at medical faculties and training institutions for the healthcare professions. The project is intended to sustainably promote the national dissemination of high-quality interprofessional collaborative training in the healthcare professions.

Concept
The project builds on existing teaching concepts and in particular the findings of projects funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation on interprofessional education (“Operation Team - interprofessional learning in the healthcare professions”) and the results of the Longitudinal Model Curriculum Communication in Medicine (LongKomm) project.

Essentially, a collection and systematization of best practice examples as well as the development of examinations tailored to them will take place. The examples will be made available digitally.

The tasks of the IPP:

  • Collection and editorial preparation of best practice examples from the field of nursing and other healthcare professions
  •  Collaboration in the development of the learning objectives catalog
  • Selecting and assigning the best practice examples for nursing to the modules of the model curriculum
  • Collaboration in the development of a training concept for the qualification of teachers in the implementation of interprofessional concepts
  •  Collaboration in the development of new examination formats
  • Participation in reporting on the project
