Description
The research project examines the challenges and resources in (semi-)inpatient care facilities in Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of management staff. The results are to be used to better understand the special situation of care facilities during the pandemic and to initiate support for care facilities by political decision-makers. At the same time, the results will help to support national preparation for comparable events.
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a serious impact on society worldwide, particularly on the healthcare system.Older people are particularly affected by this virus due to more severe courses of the disease and higher mortality. In Germany, high numbers of cases of illness in care facilities are reported, most of which affect those in need of care, but also the staff.
Care facilities are not only required to implement hygiene and action recommendations, but must also compensate for staff shortages and adapt to a changed range of services and a change in utilisation. The pandemic is therefore presenting outpatient and inpatient care facilities with unprecedented challenges. There is currently a lack of findings based on large, national samples on the challenges, resources and support needs of long-term inpatient care facilities during the pandemic.
The research project pursues the following research interest:
What current challenges do managers in (semi-)inpatient care facilities report when implementing hygiene measures and crisis management recommendations during the various waves of the coronavirus pandemic?
What resources do they use to overcome challenges in personnel management and in communication with people in need of care, relatives, employees and external service providers?
What support needs do they identify?
The data collection in the cross-sectional design is carried out in a nationwide random sample by means of an online survey of facility managers in care homes. So far, data on the first and second wave of the pandemic has been collected in Germany.
