Men’s sheds were developed in Australia 30 years ago as a concept for community health promotion. Men’s sheds are self-organized community spaces in which older men engage in activities (e.g., woodworking, computers, cooking) while supporting one another.

In MARS+, men’s sheds are being established in northern Germany as structurally new learning opportunities. They are supported in becoming sustainably self-sufficient, and networking among them is being promoted. In these newly created, self-organized, participatory learning spaces, peer-to-peer learning is complemented by external learning and educational offerings. Through continuous needs assessments, the programs are tailored specifically to the men’s sheds and are further developed in terms of quality.
