Description
Integrated urban development concepts (IUDC) are a steering and coordination instrument for the urban development of a municipality for urban, socially and economically disadvantaged urban areas. They are drawn up for a selected urban district with the participation of various departments, on-site stakeholders and the public. IUDC include a variety of measures that improve the quality of housing, mobility options or public green and open spaces as well as social and health care structures. Measures can also include the development of new ideas for the use of vacant stores or for improving the image of the district. Up to now, mainly the procedures for developing and implementing integrated urban development concepts have been evaluated. The SalusTransform joint project is the first in Germany to evaluate IUDC for their effectiveness in improving health, reducing social inequalities and increasing ecological sustainability. For this purpose, one district in each of the three cities of Bremen, Bochum and Wuppertal, for which an integrated urban development concept exists, is compared with a district without such a concept. In Bremen, for example, the district of Blumenthal, for which such a concept was adopted in spring 2023, is compared with the district of Kirchhuchting.
Together with stakeholders from the municipal administration and the urban districts, the project analyzes on the one hand how the content of the integrated urban development concepts has been designed and the individual measures implemented. On the other hand, the extent to which integrated urban development concepts can contribute to establishing health-promoting and sustainable living conditions for all people in the urban district will be examined.
The three-year project is being implemented as a joint project with the Bochum University of Applied Sciences and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy gGmbH.
