The researcher gained interesting insights into the department’s externally funded projects and the IPP’s areas of activity, as well as into the range of health sciences degree programmes in the state of Bremen, with a particular focus on the Master’s programme ‘Community Health Care and Nursing: Care Research and Care Planning, M.Sc.’ at the University of Bremen.
As part of the Erasmus Staff Mobility Programme, Sena Okten, a lecturer at Doğuş University in Istanbul and a PhD student at Doğuş University, also in Istanbul (School of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing Science), was a visiting scholar at the University of Bremen. In particular, she visited the Department of Health Care Research headed by Prof. Dr Karin Wolf-Ostermann and gained a closer insight into the Institute of Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) during her visit. Ms Okten holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from Ankara University and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Hacettepe University in Ankara. Her research focuses primarily on public health nursing, psychosocial empowerment models and addiction research. She has contributed to peer-reviewed international publications dealing with behavioural addictions and their impact on mental health among young people.
During her visit, Sena Okten gained comprehensive insights into the structures and third-party funded projects at the Department of Healthcare Research. The researchers Janissa Altona, Miriam Steens and Buğse Yüceer presented their current research projects PIZ 2.0 and HEARAZ.
A campus tour gave Ms Okten an overview of the university’s various research departments, lecture rooms like the “Keksdose”, the IWT production halls and vivid student life on campus. She also attended the seminar ‘Migration and Health’, held in English language, which enabled her to engage directly with the lecturer. A presentation by Katrin Dorow on the IPP, the department and the health sciences degree programmes in the state of Bremen gave Ms Okten further insight into the wide range of activities and opportunities at Bremen universities. Ms. Okten will now be able to draw the attention of degree-seeking students at universities in Istanbul to the University of Bremen’s Master’s programmes and encourage students to undertake an Erasmus placement in Bremen.
The visit came to a special conclusion with a direct intercultural exchange with the students Sofie Junker, Laura Glockner and Laura-Maria Castañeda-Ramírez. International visits such as these play a key role in broadening perspectives in research and teaching and in promoting sustainable academic Erasmus exchanges. The Department of Nursing Science and Healthcare Research is therefore delighted to welcome Ms Okten back in future.
