The management team of the Innovation Community Urban Health (ICUH) is seeking transdisciplinary research projects, as part of the ICUH funding program, that focus on innovative and practical approaches to overcoming barriers to environmental justice in the development of a health-promoting city. Projects must fall under one of the two main focus areas of the call:
1. Active mobility (with associated potential for reducing social inequalities in traffic-related air pollution and noise exposure)
2. New implementation alliances and innovative forms of collaboration in a freely selectable topic area of environmental justice in an urban context.
The ICUH team is seeking consortia from academia and the professional sector that wish to test an innovative solution in practice.
What is funded?
Funding is available for projects within the following parameters:
• Project duration: up to 18 months
• Funding amount: max. 200,000 euros per project
• Participants: Partnerships between academia and the professional sector
• Project regions: Implementation of the project in the Ruhr region (Regionalverband Ruhr) and/or Bremen/Bremerhaven
• Project start: Expected start date April 1, 2027; *an earlier start is possible upon prior submission of the full proposal to the management team and by mutual agreement

Background:
The Department of Social Epidemiology is part of the InnovationsCommunity Urban Health (ICUH) transfer project, which focuses on health-promoting, equitable, and climate-adapted urban development. The project aims to effectively translate scientific findings into practice.
The focus is on addressing so-called implementation gaps—that is, the question of why concepts such as environmental justice or sustainable urban development are often not implemented despite broad support. In collaboration with partners from academia and local government, innovative solutions will be developed and tested in real-world laboratories.
The ICUH collaborative project is being implemented in the state of Bremen by the Institute for Public Health and Nursing Research (IPP) at the University of Bremen and the State Association for Health and Academy for Social Medicine of Lower Saxony and Bremen (LVG & AFS). The cooperation partners in the Ruhr region are Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Department of Health Sciences), the Technical University of Dortmund (Urban and Regional Planning), the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy, and the State Center for Health NRW.
The Innovation Community Urban Health is funded with a total of five million euros through 2028 as part of the DATIpilot initiative of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR). Of this amount, approximately three million euros are available for the implementation of innovative project ideas.
