Lutz Mädler came from the University of California, Los Angeles (USA), to the University of Bremen in 2008. He is a Professor of Mechanical Process Engineering and one of three directors of the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering - IWT Bremen. In 2017, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Prize in Bremen. This is the highest award German science has to offer. Mädler is not content in merely inspiring university students for his subject. The Collaborative Research Center “Farbige Zustände” (Colored States), which he initiated, cooperates with the Wilhelm Focke High School in Bremen.
