Peter Mönnig, since 2019 Director of the Court Linz am Rhein, has researched the judicial system under National Socialist rule for years and has held lectures on NS and SED violations of justice as part of legal training in Rhineland-Palatinate since 2023. He has researched in depth the conduct of executives in the Ministry of Justice of the Reich. Within the framework of the lecture, he will read extracts from his book “Grenzverschiebung” (2021), which adresses the erosion of constitutional structures and the responsibility of jurists in times of social and political change. On the basis of a historical narrative, the book raises questions that remain highly relevant today: How are democratic institutions weakened? What is the responsibility of the judiciary? How to safeguard the rule of law?

The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Peter Mönnig on the role of the judiciary in democracy, the importance of constitutional values and the responsibility of each individual in the face of social change
