Courses in summer semester 2022

In summer semester 2022 we are pleased to be able to offer courses for 19 languages. These courses take place every week during the semester (15 weeks) and start in the week commencing April 19, 2022.

We currently plan for most of our courses to be conventional courses in the classroom but they will still make use of online learning platforms to offer challenging and varied forms of communication and study. Some courses will be held solely online. Exact details can be found in the respective course descriptions.

Intensive courses - summer 2022

How about learning Chinese, sign language or Spanish? The SZHB offers 1-week and 2-week intensive courses for a total of 9 languages. It is currently planned for all courses apart from Korean to be taught face-to-face in the classroom.

The beginners' courses for Italian, Polish, Russian and Portuguese, and English courses from B1 upwards, are recognised as educational leave in Bremen. They are intended for students, prospective students and anyone from Bremen and the surrounding regions who is interested in learning the language.

The English courses focus on academic English and English for specific purposes. We offer a range of 2-week intensive courses for B2 level to C1 level, which can also be used as proof you have the language competence needed to fulfil the university entrance requirement.

When you register for an SZHB language course or select another option from our language programme, you usually receive automatic registration confirmation by email from our database. This automatic registration confirmation is currently being returned to us marked “message cannot be delivered” when a “gmail” address is used for registration. We are working on the problem and hope to have it solved very soon. In the meantime, it would help us if you do not use a “gmail” address when registering for a course or similar, if this is at all possible. If you do not have another email address, please send us an email (szhb(at)uni-bremen.de) and we will find a solution. Many thanks!

We are offering courses in 19 languages during the winter semester 2022/23. These take place weekly, run for the entire semester (15 weeks) and start the week of October 17th.

The majority of our courses are offered in the classroom (in person), although online learning platforms will continue to be used to implement engaging and diverse communication and learning arrangements. A small number of courses will also be conducted entirely online. Details can be found in the respective course descriptions.

Intensive courses - winter 2023

Sign language, Korean and much more: 1-week and 2-week intensive language courses will be offered in 10 languages.

The beginners courses for Italian, Polish, Russian and Portuguese, as well as the English courses at the B1 level, are recognized as paid educational leave by the State of Bremen. These courses are designed for students, university applicants and anyone from Bremen and the surrounding area who is interested.

In the English section of the program, the focus is on teaching academic and technical language skills. Various two-week intensive courses are offered at levels B2 to C1, which can also be used to obtain the necessary certificates for university admissions.

Location of treatment: language course. In their English-language podcast project, students studying for a bachelor's degree in physical therapy at Bremen University of Applied Sciences shed light on career-oriented topics from the perspective of aspiring physical therapists. The students have independently researched, written, and produced all of the podcast episodes as part of their SZHB English course, under the direction of Jeremy Hookway. By working on the podcasts, the participants have expanded their language skills, broadened their subject knowledge, and practiced communicating clearly. Last but not least, the team project was a lot of fun for everyone - something you notice as a listener.

8th Bremen Symposium

Over 250 participants from 14 countries are expected, offering everyone the opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives on the topic of the conference - "Rethinking the Role of Language Centres: Flexibility, Relevance and Vision".

On the occasion of the French Language Day, the Institut Francais and the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB) are organizing an afternoon of language activities and games on March 20, 2023 from 14:00 to 17:00 at the City Library. There will be various activities about the French language and France and we invite adults and children to come play, discover and speak with us. Anyone interested is welcome, with or without previous knowledge of the language.

New course formats at the SZHB in summer semester 2023

1. Italian Pronti per L'Erasmus / Preparation course for study abroad

The course is aimed at students who are planning their Erasmus stay in Italy for the winter semester 2023/24 and have language skills between level A1.1 and A2.2.
During the course we will practise simple dialogues in an academic context in Italian, do a webquest in German on a topic related to the country, and learn important information
about studying and living in Italy.

Course dates:

Sat. May 6, 2023, Fri. May 12, 2023 and Sat. May 13, 2023.
9:30 - 13:45 (for each session)

Prerequisites: You should already have an Italian language level between A1.1 and A2.2.

2. Slavic languages duo: Croatian and Polish in one course

This summer semester, for the first time, we are offering a combination language course that will simultaneously teach the basics of Polish and Croatian in 15 sessions over the course of the semester. The course is aimed at students of all disciplines who would like to get a taste of two Slavic languages but do not have time to take two courses.
We will immerse ourselves in the respective cultures while acquiring the most important everyday expressions in both languages. The similarity of the languages should facilitate targeted learning with a focus on direct practical use. Music and language games will further enhance the learning experience.

Fridays, 2:15 - 3:45 p.m.

Prerequisites: no previous language knowledge is necessary; the course is aimed at beginners.

It's English Language Day at the Bremen City Library on April 24, 2023 from 14:00 to 16:30. The Language Centre of the Universities in the Land of Bremen (SZHB) will be there offering a selection of activities. Adults and children are most welcome to come by to play a game, discover words or take part in the language café.

Starting at 16.30, the library will be showing the film "The King's Speech" in English in the section of the building known as the "Krimibibliothek" ( 'Crime/Thriller Library').

New series of lectures on inclusive language

The series "Gendern auf..." ("Gendering in...") is concerned with egalitarian language, the respectful treatment of genders, and non-sexist communication. It is about how different languages deal with this very current issue and what solutions the respective languages offer. For the continuation of the series, further lectures are planned at different locations and in different languages such as French, German, and English.

Interactive lecture: "Gendern auf ... Tagalog"

"Gendern auf..." is a series of lectures on inclusive language organised by the Instituto Cervantes Bremen together with the Senator for Science and Ports, the Language Centre of the universities in the state of Bremen, the Bremen Language Council, the Goethe Institut and the Institut français. In the second event of the series, we will turn our attention to Tagalog, one of the ergative languages spoken in the Philippines, which has characteristics of gender neutrality. In a practice-orientated lecture, Joyce Salita, English lecturer at the SZHB, will introduce Tagalog, its regional-political-historical context and practical usage scenarios. Examples of gender-neutral characteristics as well as cases of gender marking will be shown. The interactive lecture will conclude with insights into the effects of these features on the spoken language in Philippine society.

If you already speak German at level B1/B2 and would like to practise and refresh your skills during the semester break and have an informal chat, then come along to the B1/B2 language café. It takes place on Wednesday, 07.08. from 16:00-17:00, Monday, 12.08. from 16:00-17:00 and on Thursday, 22.08., 29.08., 05.09., 12.09. each from 15:00-16:00 in the Language Resource Center (SLZ).

The language café is geared towards students and participation is free of charge.

On March 20th, the French Language Day will take place at the city library. Institut Francais and the Language Centre of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB) will host a short, lively afternoon program at the Zentralbibliothek where adults and children are invited to play games, discover and speak French.

From 14:00 to 17:00, various games and a language café await all who are interested, with or without knowledge of the language.

Rooms needed for International Summer School participants

The accommodation should be a 30-minute journey from the university by public transport (at the most). Each student needs their own room and access to a bathroom and kitchen. It is helpful if the host speaks English, as the students are still learning German.

Hosts who offer accommodation for the entire four weeks will receive €390 in compensation to cover expenses. Hosts who can only offer accommodation for a shorter period are also welcome to offer space.

French Language Cafè during the semester break

Starting at the end of July, we will be offering a French language café for the first time during the semester break. The language café is geared towards students and participation is free of charge.

Do you already speak a little French and would you like to brush up on your skills during the semester break and have an informal chat? Then come to the French language café - the first meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 30 at 3 p.m. in the Language Resource Center (SLZ).

European Day of Languages

There will be a variety of activities for both adults and children from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., focusing on Spanish languages and cultures. The event will include stands, activities such as language games and a bilingual poetry reading at 5pm, where works by Catalan, Basque and Galician poets such as Carles Riba, Gabriel Aresti and Rosalía de Castro will be recited in their original language and in German.

Come along and experience the European Day of Languages at the main branch of the city library (Am Wall, level: E+). Admission is free of charge!

The European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA) unites language testing experts throughout Europe. The aim of the organization is to promote professionalism and transparency in the field of language testing and assessment.

Prof. Claudia Harsch is the Academic Director of the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen (SZHB) and a professor of language teaching and learning research at the University of Bremen. She was president of EALTA from 2016-2019.

'Bremer Hochschulpreis' awarded to three teachers at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen for their outstanding teaching.

In November 2024, the “Bremer Hochschulpreis” for excellent teaching was awarded at Bremen City Hall. The prize in the category 'Curricular Innovation and Team Teaching', endowed with 25,000 Euros, was awarded to a team from the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, consisting of Dr. Anja Kamp, Jeremy Hookway and Prof. Dr. Stefan Veltel, for their project 'Interdisciplinary Teaching-Tandem for Internationalization@Home'.

The Bremer Hochschulpreis is awarded every two years and honors outstanding achievements in university teaching in order to highlight the importance of teaching for Bremen as a center of science

The interdisciplinary team teaching was developed in collaboration with the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB) and stemmed from the AddInno project at the University of Bremen, which is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in University Teaching. Dr. Anja Kamp and Prof. Dr. Stefan Veltel are research associates and lecturers, respectively, in the International Degree Program in Technical and Applied Biology (ISTAB) at the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, and Jeremy Hookway is an English instructor at the Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen (SZHB).

Workshop by the Languague Center on 'Tag der Lehre'

Assessing Writing: An article by Claudia Harsch et al. has been selected for the Editors' Choice List

“Validating an integrated reading-into-writing scale with trained university students” is the title of the article published in the current issue of the journal ‘Assessing Writing’ (Volume 62). The journal's editors have recognized the study for its relevance and quality and have selected it for the Editors' Choice list.

The article validates a new rating scale for integrated reading and writing tasks in a university context. Using a mixed-methods approach, student performance was analyzed, with the results showing the functionality of the scale and simultaneously revealing room for improvement.

The study is part of a DFG-funded project on “Modeling Integrated Academic-Linguistic Competencies” (MASK), which is jointly coordinated by Prof. Dr. Claudia Harsch (FB10 / SZHB) and Prof. Dr. Johannes Hartig (DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, Frankfurt am Main). Valeriia Koval and Dr. Ximena Delgado-Osorio are research associates on the project, and Dr. Voula Kanistra is a senior researcher at Trinity College, London.

YUFE Language cafés during the semester break

Do you want to practice your language skills and meet new friends from around the world? Grab a cup of coffee, turn on your computer, and visit the online YUFE language cafés for Dutch, English, French, German, and Spanish.

The language cafés take place weekly and last 90 minutes each. They are facilitated by a student tutor and help you to improve your communication and interaction skills in a relaxed environment. The topics for the sessions are chosen collectively by the participants during the first session.

No preparation is required to participate in the language cafés.

Depending on the language, registration is possible from January 20 / January 27 / February 3.

Tutoring program during the semester break

From February 14 to April 4, 2025, the tutoring program offers you the opportunity to learn the language of your choice with the help of tutors. The program takes place both in person and online, and depending on the workload you choose, you can get up to 3 ECTS credits. During the program, you will receive individual and professional support to help you learn optimally. The program is particularly beneficial for students preparing to study or work abroad and for those preparing to take language proficiency tests.

The introductory session will take place on February 14, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Zoom.

Anniversary celebration

Welcoming remarks were given by Kathrin Moosdorf, Senator for Environment, Climate, and Science; Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity at the University of Bremen; and Dr. Astrid Buschmann-Göbels, Deputy Director of the SZHB. The speakers emphasized the valuable contribution of the SZHB to language education, academic mobility, and the intercultural opening of Bremen as a site of higher education. Senator Kathrin Moosdorf remarked: "The Language Center of the Universities in the State of Bremen plays a central role in internationalization. It is not just a place where languages are taught. Here, language is understood as something that opens up access to the world and to knowledge, that invites respectful coexistence and leads to international networking and mobility. Globally networked universities strengthen research, make teaching more attractive and are good for students and researchers from all over the world. This also increases Bremen's importance as a research hub.

The musical accompaniment for the evening was provided by the duo Yaku, consisting of two students from the University of the Arts. An engaging panel discussion (moderated by Kate Stollmann and Astrid Buschmann-Göbels) with experts from the field of language teaching and learning provided insights into the topic “Language learning in higher education contexts – past, present, and future.”

On September 11, the Instituto Cervantes will take you on a journey to honor the richness, diversity and importance of Spanish as a cultural language and offer games and hands-on activities related to the Spanish language.

Language games and information stand: 15:00-18:00

Picture lecture "50 years of democracy in Spain: The Culture" at 15:00 with Elisa Catalá and at 16.30hrs a poem reading in Spanish as well as in Basque, Galician and Catalan, each with German translation. There will also be a small exhibition.

Working with AI-based suggestions for revising foreign-language texts

AI-supported tools such as Grammarly, DeepL Write, and ChatGPT are increasingly being used in higher education to revise foreign-language texts. But how should we actually work with the suggestions made by such tools? Which ones do we accept – and why? Which ones do we reject – and on what basis do we make these decisions?

Originally designed for participants in language courses, the workshop format has been adapted here for teachers of all disciplines. Together, we will discuss and develop how students use AI-based text revision in the English or German as a foreign language and how teachers can critically accompany and productively support this use. The aim is to develop strategies that promote conscious and reflective use of such tools by students and help them (and all of us) to select and evaluate suggestions in a meaningful way and integrate them into their own writing process.

Podcasts offer a creative and practical way to promote all language skills in foreign language teaching. By choosing their own topics, conducting research, writing scripts, and producing the podcast, students work independently and collaboratively on a real product. The entire process takes place in the target language, English, and not only leads to authentic learning outcomes, but also to a high degree of personal responsibility and pride in the final result. With the support of their English lecturer, students at Bremen University of Applied Sciences have developed two diverse podcast projects in English – this is where the magic happens! Language Week at Hochschule Bremerhaven

Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen are jointly hosting a language week from September 22nd to 26th, 18:00 to 19:00 each day, at the university's Cruise Lab (Building S, Room 102, entrance on Columbusstraße). Short presentations will give anyone interested the opportunity to get a taste of Bengali, German sign language, French, and Arabic. To mark the European Day of Languages on Friday, September 26, Dr. Anne Gadow from the University of Bremen will talk about multilingualism in educational institutions. The Language Week aims to show that language should not only be seen as a barrier, but that diversity also brings with it opportunities. The Center for Equal Opportunities and Diversity at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, the student initiative InkluZone, and the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen worked closely together to organize the event and developed the sample courses together with experts and students. Anyone who would like to learn more about one of the languages offered is welcome to participate.

The 26th Annual UNIcert® Workshop

On November 6 and 7, 2025, the 26th Annual UNIcert® Workshop took place at the Language Center of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg on the topic of “UNIcert® Reimagined – Teaching and Testing in the Age of Digital and Social Change.” Astrid Buschmann-Göbels, Annette Jahnke, and Joyce Salita participated in the workshop and discussed current developments in language teaching and testing in practice-oriented working groups.

The working groups addressed topics such as digital exam formats, the use of AI in language exams, and the promotion of intercultural skills. The workshop offered valuable insights and new ideas for the further development of UNIcert® and language teaching methods.

Creative Writing Workshop

In this workshop, we want to experiment with words and (foreign) languages, because every language has its own unique and new “word palette” and structure. The aim of the course is to collect methods for writing creatively in a foreign language despite limited language skills and to explore how this creative approach can be used to deepen one's own language skills. We will look at the “art of translation” and also actively engage in writing exercises.

In 2025, the Language Center of the Universities in the Land of Bremen celebrated its 30th anniversary, which was marked by various events throughout the year. In the run-up to the anniversary, we asked our teachers, former and current colleagues at the SZHB, as well as our cooperation partners to send us a recipe for publication, whereby we deliberately used the term “recipe” in a broad sense. Fortunately, many responded to this call, and the result is a diverse and colorful collection of recipes that not only beautifully reflects the diverse composition of our team, but also offers great ideas for cooking, learning, baking, and smiling.

The article by Claudia Harsch, Anika Müller-Karabil, and Astrid Buschmann-Göbels discusses the opportunities and risks posed by generative AI for language teaching at universities and shows why language learning remains a deeply human task even in the digital age. Using practical examples from the SZHB, the article highlights new (strategic) requirements and changing roles for language centers, teachers, and learners.

Physio:logical! - a podcast

Physio:logical! – The podcast from the physiotherapy program

Physiotherapy students and Jeremy Hookway demonstrated how learning can be creative and practical in their English module at Bremen University of Applied Sciences. With their project “Physio:logical!”, they deliberately stepped outside their comfort zone and produced exciting podcast episodes.

In the episodes, the students talk about the latest physiotherapy topics in English, practice their language skills, work as a team, and create professional audio productions. The result has also been well received internationally, with listeners from Canada, Australia, and the US.

The latest episodes are based on exciting research topics that were discussed at the Physio Symposium in November 2025 at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen with more than 300 experts. The topics range from pain management and innovative treatment approaches to exercises for specific stages of life. In this way, the students convey complex knowledge in an understandable, practical way and with a great deal of enthusiasm.

In the 2026 summer semester, the SZHB will have courses in over 20 different languages. The semester courses will take place in different formats, ranging from once-a-week semester-long courses to compact and weekend courses.

Most courses are held on-site and are supplemented by content on digital learning platforms. Some courses are also offered entirely online or in a hybrid format. More detailed information can be found in the respective course descriptions.

The Year of the Fire Horse has begun!

SZHB students from Jin Zhang's Chinese courses took part in the celebrations in GW1 on the university campus on the weekend of February 21 and 22.

The festivities included preparing traditional tea, writing New Year's wishes on red banners to decorate the walls, listening to musical performances by guests, attending lectures on Chinese cultural traditions, and a dance show and art exhibition organized by high school students studying Chinese at Hamburger Straße.

The Academic English self-study course helps you become more confident in academic communication. Participants expand their vocabulary, practice complex sentence structures, and learn to write texts and give presentations in a more precise and descriptive manner. The course also promotes the understanding of academic texts and strengthens the ability to justify opinions and lead discussions competently.

On average, the course lasts eight weeks and requires 5–10 hours of study per week.

The guided self-study course “Academic English with AI” demonstrates how AI tools can be used responsibly to improve academic language skills. In nine modules, participants learn to integrate AI into their learning, practice language skills, and consider ethical aspects such as plagiarism prevention. Through interactive materials, practical exercises, and personalized feedback, they continue to develop their skills confidently and thoughtfully.

Languages Are Superpowers - Workshop at the Kids' University

Languages are everywhere—in everyday life, at school, in songs, or in conversations with friends. That’s exactly where the Language Center’s workshop at the Kids’ University on March 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. began. Together, around 15 children embarked on an exciting journey of discovery into their own linguistic world.

The focus was on the question “How much language knowledge do I actually already have?” Through play, the children explored where they encounter languages in everyday life and what skills they already possess. During a word hunt around the room, pronunciation memory games, and various language activities, they experimented, laughed, and learned a little along the way. It was particularly important to focus on their own strengths and develop strategies to further expand their language skills. A creative highlight was designing their own language explorer booklet. The children collected their ideas and examples in this booklet – and if their heads were too full, they could simply color something in.
