"Refugee Entrepreneurship" is a collection of stories from refugees who have become self employed.

We congratulate our colleague Jan Elsner for the acceptance of his master thesis into the "BestMasters" series by the publisher Springer.

Under the title "Drivers of Corporate learning through an Involvement in Business Accelerators" Jan Elsner conducted a case study at Airbus, which also features interesting insights into the Startupbootcamp (Techstars) Accelerator Berlin and the Corporate Bizlab Aerospace Accelerator Hamburg.

The printed version will be available by December.

After a welcoming address by Kristina Vogt, the Senator of Economics, Labour and Europe of the freie Hansestadt Bremen, all winners were honoured.

It makes us very proud, that with Jan and Tate we could find two of our colleagues on the top positions among the winners. Well done you two!

The textbook published by Springer Verlag discusses scientific entrepreneurship models and methods and techniques relevant for start-ups in an innovative and understandable way. Each chapter guides the reader from the first ideas up the process of becoming a fully self-employed Entrepreneur.

We are proud to announce another publication by Aki Harima, Jan Harima and Prof. Freiling. The journal article entitled The Injection of Resources by Transnational Entrepreneurs: Towards a Model of the Early Evolution of an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem was recently published in the 33rd issue of the internationally renowned journal Entrepreneurship & Regional Development. The publication focuses on the flow of resources into a start-up ecosystem by transnational entrepreneurs within the start-up ecosystem of Santiago de Chile. Together with our external PhD student Ekaterina Brandtner, Prof. Freiling has published another paper in the Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation (JEMI). In the article entitled Is dominant logic a value or a liability? On the explorative turn in the German power utility industry, Brandtner and Freiling try to specify the role of "dominant logic" in an organisation. In the context of an explorative qualitative empirical study in a traditional German power utility company, the two authors ask the following questions:

How can we re-conceptualize the construct of dominant logic to address both the driving and the hampering role in the case of explorative turns?
Which factors restrain and which allow explorative turns?

Diginomics Panel Series on "Bremen's Digital Economy 2025-2030

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the University of Bremen, three current projects of the Graduate Group will be presented and discussed in a panel series with representatives of business, the public sector and academia as part of the "Campus City" event series:

In the panel Successful Interaction of Humans and Technology in Work - Do Technology and Automation Replace Humans or Do They Become Team Players? the change of work towards digital and automated workplaces will be addressed. In particular, the possibilities of effective cooperation between humans and technology or automation will be examined more closely, so that in the future it may be possible to actively integrate them into work processes, so that they are perceived as autonomous and sometimes as team players. As panelists we welcome Prof. Dr. Linda Onnasch (Humboldt University Berlin), André Biestmann (DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH), Dr. Yvonne Bauer (Senator for Economics, Labour and Europe).

In the panel Digital Start-Up Support: Virtual Incubators and Accelerators in Bremen, the digital transformation of start-up support organizations will be discussed. These virtual support systems are promising for Bremen as a startup location, as they can slow down the exodus of founders due to location-independent startup support and strengthen Bremen's ecosystem by virtually connecting external founders and their resources. The panel is composed of Reenie Vietheer (embauerment), Sinah Vogel (GO! Start-up Zentrum Oldenburg), and Bastian Müller (Senator for Economics, Labour and Europe).

In the panel From Enterprise to Online Marketplace: The Curse and Blessing of the Technology Giants, the advantages and disadvantages of large technology corporations such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google will be discussed. On the one hand, marketplaces are an economic engine for Bremen as a business location, as they enable local companies to tap into global markets. At the same time, the market power of the technology giants from America continues to grow. As discussants we welcome the managing director of Bremer Versandwerk GmbH Mr. Frank Haberkorn and Dr. Felix Engelsing from the Federal Cartel Office.

Forced displacement drastically changes the nature of refugees’ connection to their home countries and requires them to build new ties to their host countries. While refugees undergo the dynamic transformation of their embeddedness after arriving in host countries, previous studies on refugee entrepreneurship have not sufficiently examined the dynamic and procedural nature of refugees’ embeddedness and its influence on their entrepreneurial activities.

This study seeks to understand how the process of embedding influences refugees’ resource mobilization in their entrepreneurial activities. Based on 20 interviews with refugee entrepreneurs in Germany, this study revealed that forced detachment from home-country contexts led to a loss of certain resources while simultaneously creating opportunities for refugees to develop resources by building new connections. This study challenges the conventional structural deterministic approach of mixed embeddedness and theorizes disembedding and re-embedding processes of refugee entrepreneurs.

The findings suggest that these processes require a cognitive process on the part of entrepreneurial agents to become aware of a loss of resources and to reinterpret the value of their resources. Furthermore, this paper discusses how these processes constrain and enable refugees’ access to resources. The findings offer implications for policymakers of refugee-hosting countries and refugee support organizations.

For outstanding research achievements in the research field of entrepreneurship, Thomas Baron receives the Study Award for SME Research 2020/2021 donated by wiwib e.V. In his dissertation entitled "Exploring the Idiosyncratic Nature of Entrepreneurial Ecosystems", Thomas Baron investigated the regional characteristics of start-up ecosystems and their development. The jury recognized the dissertation's high research performance and practical relevance. The prize was ceremoniously awarded on 13.06.2022 at Haus Schütting in front of representatives from politics, business and science.

Moderated by Nils Marschner, we invited students to watch selected pitches from the series "Die Höhle der Löwen".
Afterwards, we discussed in a relaxed round how convincing we found the idea, the pitch and the founding team.

In the series, founders and founding teams present their idea to five successful entrepreneurs, the so-called "lions," have to face questions and may receive start-up capital. "Die Höhle der Löwen" is internationally successful and runs in the USA under the title "Shark Tank" and in the UK as "Dragons' Den".

At the end of June, three business ideas from the school teams for the German Founder's Prize for Schoolchildren were presented and evaluated at the Starthaus Bremen & Bremerhaven.

The jury was most impressed by the "Termo Caliente" project, which uses an intelligent control system to regulate the temperature in an electrified thermos flask in order to guarantee the ideal beverage temperature at all times.

The students were supported by LEMEX in the Department of Economics at the University of Bremen and the company TOPAS Industriemathematik Innovation gGmbH as company sponsor.
Leon Marquardt, as a lecturer from the practical projects future concepts bremen at LEMEX, which are initiated and supported by the Senator for Economics, Labor and Europe, and Martin Holi, Senior Business Advisor at Topas, were able to pass on valuable knowledge and practical experience to the young people interested in founding a company.

Approach: The underlying paper is conceptual. The focus is to propose new relationships among constructs and bridge existing theories. In this paper, the entrepreneurial constructs regarding the venture foundation process are linked to extant literature on Higher Educational Institutions and bordering topics. We develop research propositions by connecting these two topic streams through causalities.

Findings: We developed eight research propositions, arranged into two categories: university setting and student setting encompasses. The university setting comprises factors accentuating the specific, fertile university environment, whereas the student setting the specific status and related peculiarities.

Research limitations/implications: Limitations arise, as the conceptual paper does not refer to data. Thus, there is a risk of being incomplete and biased based on the theoretical lens. The study adds to the contextual view of student entrepreneurship. It offers a sound set of causalities as a base for future empirical research.

Practical implications: Through the insights, universities can adapt their offers in terms of support space and services and start tackling the students’ needs, as well as their weak points in terms of entrepreneurial starting conditions.

Originality/value: The paper contributes to the current literature by presenting relations between the university environment and student entrepreneurship – the two areas that have not been connected before. This allows a deeper understanding of how students deal with entrepreneurial issues and what reasons lie behind their related behavior.

In the journal article "Resilience on an emotional rollercoaster: Refugee entrepreneurship under adversity", which appeared in the European Management Issue (Volume 40, Issue 6), Tenzin Yeshi, Aki Harima and Joerg Freiling challenge the static view of resilience in entrepreneurship research by theorizing the resilience of refugee entrepreneurs as a dynamic process at the individual, relational and institutional levels during business development.

The study is based on 52 interviews with refugee entrepreneurs in the early stages of their business in Germany.

LEMEX transfer project successfully completed!

In this project, we developed a funding mechanism that enables startups to test their business ideas and prototypes quickly and systematically at events, thus increasing the likelihood of success of their business activities.

In our Bremen/Oldenburg region, we have supported 38 startups in developing their business ideas within this framework and implemented a stimulating exchange of experience on the format between diverse players in the local startup ecosystem.

Here you have the opportunity to network with employers and managers from Bremen and to gain practical experience.
There will be practical projects on current and exciting topics such as agile organization, digital transformation, new work, marketing and social workplace.
Things get underway on October 19 with an overview of the project module process and the range of projects on offer.

New cooperation between LEMEX and BRIDGE in the field of social entrepreneurship!

To raise awareness and motivation for the topic of social entrepreneurship, we are pleased to announce that together with BRIDGE - Gründen aus Bremer Hochschulen, we are developing an innovative further education program for students, doctoral candidates, employees and alumni of the University of Bremen and will run it for the first time in autumn 2023. This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

We are already looking forward to starting work on the project and would like to thank everyone involved in the application process and our regional partners for supporting the project application!

In the 23rd edition of the "African Development Perspectives Yearbook: Business Opportunities, Start-ups, and Digital Transformation in Africa", Joerg Freiling published the article "On the Cultural Sphere of Transnational Entrepreneurship: Evidence from Digital Business Development of African Entrepreneurs".

The article examines the question of how the (inter-)cultural characteristics of transnational entrepreneurship influence the business development of transnational entrepreneurs with a high degree of cultural distance.

That was the Social Impact Challenge Weekend!

Here, participants were able to work in groups on innovative solutions for the topics that were particularly close to their hearts. They were supported by various social entrepreneurs, who gave exciting and inspiring keynote speeches and supported the participants in working on their project.

The participants, as well as an invited jury from BRIDGE - Gründen aus Bremer Hochschulen and Starthaus Bremen & Bremerhaven, voted on the various projects and selected a winning team. The team "MHI" won the race with an exciting project to improve support and information for migrants in Germany.

We would like to thank everyone who made this great event possible for their support, as well as our participants for their cooperation and innovative ideas!

Over the past eleven years, Aki has played a key role in shaping LEMEX in teaching and research - be it in her seminars, conference organization and participation or her excellent research work. A particular highlight of her work was the excursion to Namibia with a group of students to research startup support programs on site. Aki was awarded the Berninghausen Prize for this innovative teaching format. This also helped to deepen relations between Bremen and Windhoek, which also attracted regional attention.
Aki's remarkable achievements also include various successful projects. For example, she played a key role in researching the development of a virtual incubator for refugees, developed the MDE initiative into an established international conference for migration and diaspora entrepreneurship and made internationally recognized contributions to entrepreneurial ecosystem research during her research stay in Santiago de Chile. Aki now enjoys a high reputation in entrepreneurship research and is very well networked.
Aki has also greatly enriched the LEMEX team outside of his core professional activities. Always supportive with an open ear, innovative ideas, good humor and great passion, Aki is a role model among colleagues and a great source of inspiration.

Dear Aki, we would like to thank you for your remarkable achievements, your great support and your sincere friendship and wish you all the best and much success in your new role!

Exciting research presentations!

In their project "Migrant Entrepreneurship in Entrepreneurial Ecosystems - Obstacles & Coping Mechanisms", Violetta Tsesarska and Vinh Nghi Ha used the example of the Bremen start-up ecosystem to identify obstacles that first-generation founders with a migrant background face when entering entrepreneurial ecosystems and describe coping mechanisms for overcoming these obstacles - both at the individual level of the founders and support mechanisms at the ecosystem level.

In their research project "The overlooked Nature of Rural Entrepreneurship", Robin Wieringa, Pia Krahn and Lennart Korn focused on the topic of business start-ups in rural areas and conceptualized a heterogeneous characterization of the phenomenon. The students identified two types of rural entrepreneurship: those that take advantage of the rural context through their rural roots for entrepreneurial activity, and those that overcome the weaknesses of the rural context through network connections in urban regions, thus combining the advantages of both worlds.

For their research work, the students conducted and analyzed numerous interviews with entrepreneurs, experts and key players in the entrepreneurship scenes in Bremen and in rural areas of the North-West region and around Groningen as part of the seminar. We congratulate them on their extremely successful work!

A jury consisting of Fabian Oestreicher (BRIDGE) and Saskia Wegge (Starthaus Bremen und Bremerhaven) selected a winning team in the categories "Best Pitch" and "Best Problem-Solving Concept".

Team MIMI (Mobile Intelligente Müll Insel) won both categories. The group dealt with the problem of the high volume of waste and its challenging disposal at festivals and presented their idea in a particularly convincing pitch!

We congratulate all our student teams on their successful presentations and would like to thank the jury and Cristin Ruggow (Sparkasse Bremen) for supporting this event! We look forward to accompanying you in the further development of your concepts in our "Entrepreneurship & Management II" course next semester!

LEMEX Student Pitches

Over the course of the winter semester, the student teams developed business ideas using the design thinking method and tested them using prototypes.

In a pitch format, the students convincingly presented and discussed their results in front of an expert jury consisting of Quynh Duong Phuong (University of Bremen), Prof. Dr. Martin Holi (Bremen University of Applied Sciences) and Lars Kesseler (ASTRAIT).

The jury awarded the team #HandwerkHero for the best business idea, which includes a do-it-yourself platform for household repairs. The jury also honored the professional presentation performance of the InCase team, which developed the idea of an AI-based support tool for legal advisors. The teams Global2Connect, an HR platform for the targeted recruitment of foreign specialists, and Rekhen, a laundry service with delivery service, also provided exciting insights into their concepts.

Our special thanks go to the course participants for their successful presentations, the jury for their dedicated feedback and lecturer Thomas Baron for supervising the student teams.

Integration through entrepreneurship: New research project at LEMEX!

To this end, they will conduct an in-depth empirical analysis of the challenges, needs, resources, and skills of the refugee entrepreneurs and the Moldovan country context surrounding them. The main goal is to develop a solution concept and thus sustainable integration strategies that target the identified challenges while taking into account the existing strengths and resources. The project is funded by the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit.

Our students in the CAMPUSiDEEN competition!

The team, consisting of Lara Eilts, Lena Kaufmann, Iska Poerschke, Niklas Rosenau, Joschka Seusing and Clara Weritz, developed the idea for the mobile and intelligent waste island (MIMI) in the Entrepreneurship and Management II module at our department. It is an innovative solution for waste disposal at festivals. A reward system that offers both individual and collective incentives motivates visitors to dispose of their waste themselves. MIMI also impresses with its clear design and gamification approach. The aim of MIMI is to combat the problem of large amounts of waste left behind at festivals.

We are very proud that such a great project could be created in one of our courses and are delighted that our students dared to take part in the CAMPUSiDEEN competition. We congratulate the MIMI team on their great pitch and successful participation and look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future!

The conference was organized by the Audencia Business School together with the EIASM Network (European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management) and the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB). On November 18 and 19, we took part in the convention at the Weser Stadium as an exhibitor together with future concepts bremen and Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Bremen-Oldenburg. Here we had the opportunity to make new contacts, hold many exciting discussions and report on the work of LEMEX.

On November 20, LEMEX organized a series of events in the BAB Lab under the name “Praxis Pur” as part of the start-up week. We had the pleasure of welcoming many great guest speakers!
In the first block of the event, “Praxis Pur: Die Gründungs- und Aufbauphase von Unternehmen”, Hendrik Buhl (SCOUTASTIC), Carl Schütte (Solid Sleep), William Chitangala (William Chitangala Marketing) and Jannis Frank (b+m Informatik GmbH) gave exciting insights into various areas of founding a company.
In the second part of the event, “Pure Practice: The Growth and Maturity Phase of Companies”, Augusto Capece (GetCoding - MehrZeitFürErfolg), Sohrab Mohammad (Reishunger), Hendrik Buhl (SCOUTASTIC) and Jannis Frank (b+m Informatik GmbH) provided tips and tricks for company growth and shared insights and interesting experiences.

We are very pleased about the many suggestions and exciting discussions that we were able to take away from this year's start-up week. We would like to thank the organizers from Starthaus Bremen & Bremerhaven for making this great event possible. Ziel des Projektes war es, eine umfassende Marketingstrategie mit dem Fokus auf die präzise Zielgruppendefinition und deren gezielte Ansprache für das Unternehmen Coolsports zu entwickeln.

Im Projektverlauf kamen verschiedene Methoden wie Design Thinking, SWOT-Analysen und interaktive Workshops zum Einsatz, um die strategische Ausrichtung zu definieren und Maßnahmen zu priorisieren. Das Ergebnis des Projekts war eine optimierte Marketingstrategie, die gezielt auf die Bedürfnisse der definierten Zielgruppe ausgerichtet ist. Dadurch soll der Bekanntheitsgrad von Coolsports erhöht und die authentische und direkte Kund:innenansprache deutlich verbessert werden.

Dieses Projekt hat verdeutlicht, wie wichtig eine klar definierte Zielgruppenstrategie sowie die gezielte Nutzung digitaler Kanäle für den Erfolg eines mittelständischen Unternehmens sein können.

future concepts bremen connects students with companies from Bremen. In interdisciplinary teams, they work together with practice partners on real challenges and develop innovative solutions. The projects cover current topics from the fields of organization, strategy development, new work, marketing and business model innovation. The module is aimed at anyone who would like to gain practical experience and make contacts in the business world - no prior knowledge is required.

Lean Startup & Prototyping offers space for entrepreneurial ideas. Students work in small teams on their own start-up concepts, develop prototypes and refine them step by step. The structured process and individual feedback help them to further develop their ideas in a targeted manner.

The joint kick-off of both modules will take place on April 10, 2025. The process and the projects on offer will be presented.
Registration is via Stud.IP with the event numbers VAK 07-B37-6-13-41 for “future concepts bremen - case studies from practice” and VAK 07-B37-6-13-42 for “Lean Startup & Prototyping”.

Students who want to develop professionally and personally, gain practical experience and build networks are cordially invited to register and work on exciting projects together with fellow students.

At the conference, our team members Jörg Freiling, Tate Reit and Tenzin Yeshi presented the key findings of the project, which identified the needs, challenges and skills of Ukrainian refugee entrepreneurs. We also proposed a strategic plan to improve their integration into the Moldovan entrepreneurial ecosystem through a hybrid business incubator. We are confident that our joint efforts will contribute to the socio-economic inclusion of Ukrainian refugees and foster innovation and growth in the country.

Eighteen international students used the Lean Startup approach to develop initial prototypes, which were further refined over the course of the weekend through iterative feedback rounds. The workshop ended with a gallery walk, where the students presented their final results.

The seminar was led by Quynh Duong Phuong from LEMEX. We also welcomed Muhammad Hassan from Truscova and Stephanie Rabe from BRIDGE – Gründen aus Bremer Hochschulen with exciting guest lectures that provided our students with valuable inspiration and additional input. Thomas Baron was also there to support our students as a start-up coach with active feedback.

🚀 New publication from the Chair of Small Business, Start-ups and Entrepreneurship!

Our student Merle Petersen, together with Dr Quynh Duong Phuong and Prof. Jörg Freiling, has published an exciting research paper in the Journal of Enterprising Communities:

👉 ‘Why do women found start-ups less often than men? A systematic literature analysis’

The study examines why women start startups less often than men and summarises the current state of research on the underlying causes – from social conditions and role models to institutional factors.

📢 New publication – “Rethinking Support Policies: The Role of Belonging in Entrepreneurial Ecosystems”

The study shows that belonging is a key success factor for migrant entrepreneurs. It builds trust, facilitates access to networks and strengthens resilience, especially in challenging neighbourhoods.

Two case studies from the Ruhr region illustrate how migrant entrepreneurs overcome discrimination, strengthen communities and have a lasting impact on local ecosystems.

The results underscore the importance of incorporating emotional and social dimensions more strongly into the design of inclusive support systems.
