register here

June 15-16, 2023

Research Depot of the German Maritime Museum/ Leibniz Institute of Maritime History, Bremerhaven | Haus der Wissenschaft, Bremen.

Together with the Center for Materials and Processes (MAPEX) and the Institute for Knowledge Media (IWM), the German Maritime Museum/ Leibniz Institute of Maritime History (DSM) is organizing the conference "Knowledge through Digitized Materials? - Objects, Images, Perspectives." On two consecutive days, the partners of the SAW transfer research project "Digital Materialities" will discuss with guests from science and culture the aesthetic dimension of digitized material, its evidential function and its barriers.

Digitization allegedly is occupied with a thorough visualization and analytical accessibility of objects. By revealing formerly hidden details and traces, it is intended to better express their ‘true’ form. At the same time, digitization has the potential for paving the ways for a worldwide exchange of knowledge about these objects, making them available on the web with little legal restrictions or technical access barriers. We illuminate, colorize, enlarge, look at details, and comment.

What different materialities are actually produced in the digital objects? To what extend is a digital object an artifact in its own right, and therefore detached from its ‘analogue’ counterpart? Could it acquire any epistemic value at all without such a distance - be it in the sense of an abstraction or a concretion? And what intrinsic disturbances, distortions, artifactsand biases are haunting technical digitization processes – as ‘ghosts in the machine’ whose analysis, in turn, can unlock great epistemic potential?

Digital images – both in museums and exhibitions and in industry, medicine, or the natural sciences – have a fundamental heuristic function today: Information is derived from them that is decoupled form an empirical verifiability at an incremental rate.

However, still too seldom reflected seem the various processes and forms by which media techniques inscribe themselvesinto virtual objects. Different digitization media and methods are not simply extensions of our senses, but operate withtheir own specific media-technical logics. These digitization media and methods in part generate quite 'non-human' sensory data which must first be 'translated' for the human senses. They imply (in a double sense) 'programmatic' decisions that influence the representation of objects and artifacts; and they actively shape our perspectives on them. As a consequence, they also guide the way knowledge is produced.

Last but not least, in museums as well as in scientific or industrial contexts, we have to ask on which levels digital and analog objects can (and should) function, interact and conflict with each other? How do spaces, situations and everyday practices influence the perception of digital objects, and which specific media-technical environments are constituted in these processes?

The conference will address these issues from an overarching perspective as well as through specific case studies from museum and industrial application areas. In doing so, it brings theory and practice from different disciplinary fields into close exchange.

Registration for face-to-face participation is open until April 30, 2023. Registration for virtual participation is open until June 12, 2023. The goal of this session is to illuminate what happens behind the scenes in publishing, with a specific focus on publishing at Nature Energy. As handling editor for the social sciences at Nature Energy, Silvana Lakeman will provide an overview of the process. The session will cover journal selection and the differences between various Nature outlets, and the editorial process – from initial submission to final publication. This includes how to overcome common hurdles in ensuring your paper is catching the attention of editors and reviewers for the right reasons, and examples of successful papers. Any and all questions on this topic, as well as on the Editorial career track, are welcome.

Applications span from Chemistry and Physics to Process Engineering.

In-situ refers to measurements performed under conditions that match the actual environment of the system, without removing or significantly altering it. In-operando and in-process describes experiments in which a system is analyzed under real working conditions, while it is actively functioning. Often such studies are found at the borders of the disciplines, providing an important impact on fostering interdisciplinary work among these.

This workshop brings together experts and young scientists and will cover both, an introduction into the methodology as well as insights into recent results.

Registrations are open, click here.

Program

6th of May 2026 - Wednesday

12:00 Arrival at Haus der Wissenschaft (city center of Bremen): Snacks and Coffee

12:30 In-operando studies of chemical reactions at surfaces,
                          Edvin Lundgren, Lund University

13:30 In-situ real-time imaging of surface chemical processes and transformations
                          Jan Ingo Flege, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg

14:30 Coffee break

15:00 DAFS from thin oxides
                         Lindsay Merte, Malmö University

16:00 Epitaxy and in-situ optical spectroscopies of 2D materials
                         Eugenio Zallo, Walter-Schottky Institute, München

17:00 Break, Drinks, Discussion

17:30 In-situ RHEED, Laser reflectometry und line-of-sight QMS (and in-situ XRD)
                         Oliver Bierwagen, PDI Berlin

19:00 Workshop dinner

7th of May 2026 - Thursday

08:30 Arrival at Haus der Wissenschaft: Coffee

09:00 X-ray imaging of single catalyst nanoparticles under operando reaction conditions,
                         Andreas Stierle, DESY Hamburg

10:00 Coffee break

10:30 Optical spectroscopy for studying the particle synthesis in flame spray pyrolysis
                         Johannes Kiefer, Universität Bremen

11:30 Towards in-situ and in-process tool wear determination
with robot-assisted optical metrology and greybox modeling
Andreas Fischer, Dirk Ströbener, BIMAQ Bremen

12:30 Closing remarks and end of workshop + snacks

Organizing team:

Jens Falta
Wilken Seemann
Susanne Müller-Schröter
Ulrike Besenthal-Falta
