Professor Matthias Klumpp (Faculty 7 of the University of Bremen) welcomed two experts from the field as guest speakers in the lecture “Value Creation Processes” on April 22, 2026: Gerd-Wilhelm Brüning, Head of Logistics at REWE Nord, and Sarah Lemmermann, Operations Manager of the Sottrum warehouse site near Bremen.

During the guest lecture, exciting insights were provided into the logistics structures and distribution strategy of REWE Nord, combined with explanations of the latest sales innovations in private labels and omnichannel delivery methods such as automated stores and pickup stations.

Based on concrete figures and examples, the importance of efficient logistics networks for supplying more than 1,200 delivery points in Northern Germany became evident. For example, the construction of the new Henstedt-Ulzburg warehouse in recent years has more than doubled the overall distribution capacity, which will continue to sustainably support the growth of the REWE Group in the future.

One focus of the interesting practical insight into modern logistics management at REWE Nord was the emphasis on flexibility, sustainability, and employee orientation – REWE as a “Social Network for 100 Years” consciously assumes significant social responsibility in this area, particularly with regard to food production in cooperation with farmers and value chain partners.

Finally, the importance of cooperation with the university as an important partner in education, teaching, and research was highlighted, including joint studies, teaching content, and projects related to thesis work – with the aim of encouraging more students to become involved in the exciting world of retail logistics as part of the extensive collaboration between REWE Nord and the University of Bremen.
