The "VIA TRANSFER podcasts" are a service by Transferstelle Viadrina for regional companies. In personal interviews, Viadrina scientists report on their research projects. Topics are company-relevant questions, development potentials and solutions.

The podcast has been forwarded to many hundreds of companies.

The shipbuilding expert and former Bremen State Councilor of the Department of Economics and Ports spoke to more than 70 participants at the lecture event "Dance with the volcano - the East German shipyards and the Bremen volcano" on January 28, 2021. Previously, the Weser Kurier reported: Bremer Vulkan - "Money has been enough".

It is a story that is still controversial today: The Bremen ship building company “Vulkan” participated prominently in the privatization process in East Germany with the support of EU funds. The then CEO Friedrich Hennemann was thus able to realize his vision of a large maritime group. In addition to the GDR shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund, several West German companies were also on the shopping list. The Bremen Vulkan went bankrupt in 1996, 25 years ago, causing a drastic structural crisis for the regions affected. Many disappointed people stood outside the shipyard gates in both East and West. Committees of inquiry at the federal and state levels dealt with the Vulkan case.  The legal disputes ended with a settlement in 2010. The structural economic challenges persist.

MDR Podcast "Jahre nach dem Umbruch im Osten"
Mod-Block-DDR organised a panel discussion on economic and monetary union at the occasion of the 30-year anniversary of German unity. Participants and experts in economic transformation discussed successes achieved, mistakes made and useful lessons learned. The moderator Ine Dippmann (MDR) has now published a concise and entertaining radio report that was broadcast on MDR's news radio on 14.12.2020 and is permanently available.

We warmly recommend this podcast, especially to listeners who find the more than one-hour discussion too lengthy. It captures the voices of Christa Luft, Johannes Ludewig, Rudolf Hickel and Udo Ludwig in a representative way. The lively and controversial discussion is brought to the point. All this is commentated by music from the late 1980s and early 1990s and thus enriched with the former atmosphere and further perspectives.

The project, in which four universities and numerous social science and humanities disciplines are involved, spans the arc from the past (GDR) to the present of the East German states. It aims to close gaps in knowledge about the GDR and to help explain the persistent structural inequalities between East and West.

On 22 November 2019, Michael Fritsch, Michael Wyrwich and Maria Kristalova, Members of the TP 2 "The legacy of the GDR innovation system", will participate at the Long Night of the Science, organized by the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. On 9 October 2019, in preparation for its next annual report (2020), the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation conducted a hearing of experts on the East German innovation system and the technological performance of the New Länder 30 years after German re-unification.

The hearing also focused in particular on the future design of funding at the interface of innovation, regional and structural policy. In addition to representatives of the federal ministries (BMWi and BMBF), Jutta Günther was invited as a scientific member of the expert panel.

The Expert Commission for Research and Innovation is a panel of experts appointed by the Federal Government and made up of six professors working in the field of innovation economics. Once a year, the EFI submits its report on the analysis and evaluation of the German innovation system, including innovation policy recommendations, to the Federal Government. The EFI office and scientific staff are located in Berlin.

Jutta Günther and Ann Hipp offer the seminar "How a socialist economy transforms into a market system - the example of East Germany" in the winter semester 2019/2020 for master students in the faculty of economics at the University of Bremen.

The seminar provides basics of transformation economics. In addition, it accentuates the question of what effects the lack of modernisation investments in the GDR has had on the East German economy to this day.

Interview by Gabor Steingart in "Morning Briefing" (Podcast)

The Bremen economist Michael Rochlitz recently published a book together with Alexander Libman from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich in which the two scientists compare the economic development processes and the reform efforts of Russia and China. The book deals primarily with the question of how the two authoritarian countries create incentive structures for economic growth in their peripheral regions.

In this interview, former editor-in-chief and publisher of the Handelsblatt Gabor Steingart asks the Bremen economist questions about the economic conflict between Russia and China.
