                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At invitation of the Aachen-Cologne Regional Group of Business Psychology of the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP), Dr. Julian Decius gave a talk on "New Learning in the Company – What is really 'new' about it?" on November 12, 2021. The virtual keynote covered the development of a conceptual framework model to explain New Learning and its possible applications in practice. The subsequent discussion together with the audience resulted in valuable impulses for further research on New Learning in the Working Group of Business Psychology with a focus on Organizational Psychology.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <title>Book chapter: Student learning in pandemic times</title>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How do students actually learn in times of Covid19? Predominantly virtually, of course – but not only in formally organized online courses, but also self-directed and informally through their own trial and error, feedback, and reflection. Together with Janika Dannowsky and Prof. Dr. Niclas Schaper, Dr. Julian Decius has investigated which personal characteristics are related to formal and informal learning during studies.</p><p>The analysis of data from over 800 students at German universities shows, for instance, that extroverted and neurotic students are more likely to learn informally. Students who like to compare their performance with others (social reference norm) are more likely to learn formally. Conscientiousness is important for both forms of learning, but the association with formal learning is higher. The resulting implications for teaching practice are also discussed in the article, which was published in German as a chapter in the edited volume "Hochschule auf Abstand" (transcript Verlag) and is freely available online <a href="https://bit.ly/3l5DN4e" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">here</a>.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <title>New scale published to measure informal workplace learning</title>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Informal workplace learning is a multifaceted construct. According to the octagon model of informal learning, this includes, for instance, learning by doing, reflection, and feedback. &nbsp;How can this variety be measured validly with a questionnaire scale? Together with his co-authors Dr. Michael Knappstein, Prof. Dr. Niclas Schaper and Dr. Andreas Seifert, Dr. Julian Decius has published an article on measuring informal workplace learning with an economic 8-item short scale in the journal "Human Resource Development Quarterly" (<abbr title="Human Resource Development Quarterly">HRDQ</abbr>). The scale is open access and license-free for use available <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/hrdq.21461" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">here</a>.<br> The basis for the new scale development was the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/hrdq.21368" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">comprehensive 24-item scale</a> that Dr. Julian Decius and his author team had also published in <abbr title="Human Resource Development Quarterly">HRDQ </abbr>in 2019.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Dr. Frederic Hilkenmeier, Christian Fechtelpeter and Dr. Julian Decius have empirically investigated how technology transfer can succeed, using data from the leading-edge cluster it's OWL. For this purpose, they analyzed survey data and objective data from 106 transfer projects.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>“New Work requires New Learning” – this claim appears repeatedly in academia and practice. But what exactly is New Learning? Until now, there has been no conceptual framework for the prerequisites and processes associated with New Learning. Together with Prof. Dr. Timo Kortsch, Dr. Hilko Paulsen and Prof. Dr. Anja Schmitz, Dr. Julian Decius developed a psychologically based model following ten assumptions about New Learning.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Leadership research and organizational learning research seem to be still poorly linked. In order to contribute to this intersection, Dr. Julian Decius, together with a research team around Dr. Muhammed Qamar Zia from the University of Karachi (Pakistan), investigated the question of what role perceived transformational leadership plays in employees' informal workplace learning. The corresponding study was published in the<strong> Leadership &amp; Organization Development Journal </strong>(IF = 3.242). The results show that transformational leadership particularly strengthens informal learning when employees exhibit high self-efficacy. Moreover, informal learning plays a mediating role between transformational leadership and job involvement. Dr. Julian Decius was virtually connected to receive the dissertation award due to his current research stay at Maastricht University. Little has been known, however, about informal learning among students at universities, outside of traditional courses. The article by Dr. Julian Decius, Janika Dannowsky, and Prof. Dr. Niclas Schaper just published in the journal <em>Active Learning in Higher Education</em> (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF</abbr>= 4.765) presents a model and a measure to assess informal learning among students in higher education. First, together with his co-authors Dr. Michael Knappstein and Dr. Andreas Seifert, he presented a new typology on metacognitions and social support in the workplace and its empirical validation using an experimental vignette study. Second, together with Prof. Dr. Isabel Raemdonck from UC Louvain, he presented a new scale development for measuring Self-directed Learning Orientation in four different languages (<abbr title="English">ENG</abbr>, <abbr title="Dutch">NL</abbr>, <abbr title="French">FR</abbr>, <abbr title="German">GER</abbr>). This is the title of the current issue of PERSONALquarterly, for which Dr. Julian Decius, together with Prof. Dr. Heiko Weckmüller (Koblenz University of Applied Sciences) and Dr. Michael Knappstein (<abbr title="International School of Management">ISM</abbr> Dortmund), authored <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/366429000_Die_Wirkung_der_Kommunikation_eines_Corporate_Purpose_auf_die_Arbeitgeberattraktivitat" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">an empirical article</a> on how communicating a corporate purpose affects employer attractiveness. Corporate purpose refers to a company's raison d'être beyond the need to make a profit, for example social benefit or environmental orientation.</p><p>In an experimental vignette study, young professionals were asked to put themselves in the shoes of job applicants and were randomly assigned various career pages of a company. The career pages differed in whether the applicants were provided with various purpose dimensions or classic attributes of employer attractiveness (including a pleasant working atmosphere, a permanent contract or an attractive salary – collectively referred to as "standard communication").</p><p>The results show that corporate purpose – contrary to expectations – does not predict better employer attractiveness, but only similar to "standard communication". This is true for the purpose dimensions of societal benefit, environmental orientation and diversity. The emphasis on the company's customer orientation and on opportunities for personal development in the company ranked even lower than "standard communication." At this point, further research is needed on the background and generalizability of the results. On a positive note, however, it can be said that young professionals evidently pay attention not only to permanent contracts and salaries when choosing an employer, but at least as much to "soft" and societally meaningful factors.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Under the title "Learning in the work context – a chore or an underestimated opportunity?", Dr. Julian Decius presented his research on work-related learning upon invitation by Dr. Miriam Schilbach (Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research) at the <a href="https://www.psychologie.uni-mainz.de/institutskolloquium-im-ws-2022-23/" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">Institute Colloquium</a> of Psychology at the University of Mainz. The lecture on 16.12.2022 addressed the need for continuous learning and further development of employees in a constantly changing, dynamic working world - both for their own employability and for organizational success. Furthermore, the talk differentiated various forms of work-related learning and presented the degree of effectiveness of learning along different dimensions (such as technology, simulation, or individualization) based on yet unpublished meta-analytical findings. In the further course, a special focus was put on informal workplace learning. Using examples of industrial employees in medium-sized companies, Julian Decius presented the conceptualization and operationalization of informal learning as well as interactions with work demands, resources, and job crafting. Finally, an outlook on a novel conceptual model of "New Learning" including initial empirical validation and discussion of theoretical and practical implications was presented.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Do they increase internal employability or external employability, which makes employees attractive to competitors on the labor market?                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After a long and intensive peer-review process, the article "<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jvb.2023.103893" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">Active learning, active shaping, or both? A cross-lagged panel analysis of reciprocal effects between work design and informal workplace learning, and the mediating role of job crafting</a>" has been accepted for publication in the prestigious Journal of Vocational Behavior (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF</abbr>= 12.082). Dr. Julian Decius and his co-authors found that informal learning can also influence working conditions – which was previously assumed to be exclusively in the opposite direction – and that this effect is partly mediated by job crafting. Furthermore, it was confirmed that informal learning and job crafting are largely distinct constructs. Other contributors to the publication were Professor Dr. Niclas Schaper (Paderborn University), Dr. Katharina Klug (University of Bremen) and Dr. Andreas Seifert (Paderborn University).</p>]]></content:encoded>

During the summer semester, the students had researched literature and conducted interviews with Bayer 04 employees in order to develop practical recommendations for promoting personnel development and talent management. At the invitation of Bayer 04, the final presentation took place in the BayArena on site in Leverkusen.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius, in cooperation with Dr. Peter Bleses from the Institute for Work and Economy (iaw), has acquired the BMBF-funded regional competence center for labor research "RessourcenEntwicklung in Dienstleistungsarbeit" (RessourcE) for a five-year period starting July 1, 2023. Twenty funded partners from the North-West of Germany are involved in the project network.</p><p>The competence center aims to strengthen the competitiveness of regional companies in the logistics sector (including port operations) and in the healthcare industry, with a particular focus on qualification and competence development for workers in low-skilled jobs, as well as health-promoting and technically-supported work and a positive leadership culture. On the RessourcE Competence Advisory Board, Prof. Dr. Vera Hagemann will represent the topic of "Data-based human resource management", Prof. Dr. André Heinemann the topic of "Regional economic fiscal analyses", and Dr. Katharina Klug the topic of "Health-oriented leadership".</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <title>Publication on Goals and Informal Learning of Lecturers in Higher Education</title>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new publication in the journal "Human Resource Development Quarterly" (IF = 3.3) by Dr. Julian Decius and Dr. Julia Wegenka (née Hein) from University of Mannheim investigated the relationship between lecturers' goals in their teaching and informal learning activities. Lecturers can have different goals related to their teaching, e.g., to continuously improve their competencies (learning approach goals) or not to teach worse than their colleagues (normative avoidance goals). The results of the study, which is based on surveys with more than 500 lecturers from Germany and Austria, indicate: Learning approach goals are positively related to self-based informal learning such as trying out one's own solutions or reflection, whereas normative avoidance goals are positively related to social-based informal learning such as seeking feedback or learning from a model. These tendencies appear to be relatively stable across different semester situations (before, during, and after the teaching period). Dr. Julian Decius investigated this question together with Prof. Dr. Carolin Graßmann from VICTORIA International University of Applied Sciences (Berlin). Based on data from almost 300 participants and using relative importance analysis, the researchers found that (in this order) the New Work characteristics of relevance of work, participation, and dissolution of boundaries between work and private life appeared to be most strongly associated with informal learning. Contrary to the assumption, the strength of these relationships was not influenced by the learning climate in the organization.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius reported on work-related learning profiles at the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) in the mini-track "Digitization of Work", chaired by Tobias Scholz and Juho Hamari.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In his presentation, he and his co-authors Timo Kortsch and Anja Schmitz explored the following research question: To what extent are the experiences of face-to-face learning (e.g., traditional classroom training), synchronous virtual learning (e.g., real-time web seminar), and asynchronous virtual learning (e.g., e-learning environment with learning nuggets) related to the satisfaction of basic needs at work according to Self-Determination Theory?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The sample of over 3000 employees allowed meaningful latent profile analyses to be calculated.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In 2022, Dr. Julian Decius published a theoretical model of the New Learning process together with Prof. Dr. Timo Kortsch, Dr. Hilko Paulsen, and Prof. Dr. Anja Schmitz. First model assumptions have now been empirically supported and were published in an article in "Wirtschaftspsychologie aktuell" (Kortsch, Decius, &amp; Paulsen, 2023).</p><p>The basic idea of the model is that certain prerequisites of the learners and the work environment are important for New Learning so that learning opportunities can be recognized and exploited. A survey of 129 employees at three measurement points revealed the expected relationships between the LOPP (Learning Opportunities Perception Potential) - a perception potential for learning opportunities - and perceived learning opportunities, which in turn are associated with learning intention. There was also a compensatory effect: on the one hand, a strong learning culture is conducive to learning for all learners (whether they have a high or low LOPP). On the other hand, it was shown that individuals with a high perception potential for learning opportunities can learn well even with a low learning culture. The most unfavorable combination is accordingly: low LOPP and a low learning culture. It is therefore best for companies to promote the learning culture and LOPP of their employees. The workshop was organised by the team from the Organisational Psychology department together with the Institute for Technical Assistance Systems at Jade University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg. As part of the workshop, representatives of the project partners PTS Logistics GmbH and Seifert Logistik Bremen GmbH were invited to discuss the requirements for an AI-based tool to be developed in the future to recognise the potential of employees in logistics. As a result, various application scenarios and needs of the practice partners were identified and ideas about the functionalities of the AI tool were exchanged, which will be incorporated into the conceptualisation and development of the tool.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Together with Prof. Dr. Vera Hagemann (Chair of Business Psychology &amp; Human Resource Management), Dr. Julian Decius has published an article in the high-ranking journal “Learning and Instruction” (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF</abbr> = 6.2). The results of a computer-based laboratory experiment with 142 two-person teams illustrate the importance of feedback orientation for the perceived usefulness and fairness of feedback, which in turn positively influences acceptance and, to some extent, team awareness. The study also showed the superiority of process-oriented feedback over performance-oriented feedback. The Role of Time Pressure in Enhancing Work-Related Learning when Using Generative AI" from the LeChat project, in which Hannah Louisa Krüger, Carolin Graßmann and Michèle Rieth are also involved. In addition, together with Franziska Kößler, he co-authored Katharina Klug's presentation on "Stressed about Money and the Future: How Student's Financial Strain Relates to Informal Learning, Career Distress, Self-efficacy and Satisfaction with Career Prospects".                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On 17 June 2024, Annelie Lorber and Hannah Krüger had the opportunity to present their work in the RessourcE project at the 13th Researching Work &amp; Learning Conference in Linköping, Sweden, as part of the symposium "Maintaining skills (not only) for the unexpected - ways to detect and overcome skill decay in highly automated working environments". The symposium was organised by Stephanie Conein and Olga Vogel was a panellist.</p><p>Together with Julian Decius, Vera Hagemann and Katharina Klug, the panel discussed the requirements for an AI-based tool to support logistics companies in identifying training potential and maintaining skills in the future, in order to be accepted and used by employees.</p><p>First results from an employee survey, a user workshop and a first document review were reported in the presentation.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <title>Paradoxes of Work-related Learning</title>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Professional life is full of paradoxes and contradictions, and the same applies to work-related learning. In a recent study, Dr. Hilko Paulsen, Prof. Dr. Timo Kortsch and Dr. Julian Decius examined which work-related learning paradoxes exist and how these are assessed by practitioners in terms of contrariness and frequency. The results of the study have now been published in English in the journal ‘Gruppe. Interaction. Organisation (GIO)’.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Based on three forms of work-related learning (i.e., formal, informal, and self-regulated learning) and three learning-relevant dimensions of organizational goal conﬂicts (i.e., stability vs. change, exploration vs. exploitation, and short-term vs. long-term), nine work-related learning tensions are described that can lead to paradoxical situations. Using survey data of 113 experts from the ﬁeld, these tensions were evaluated according to their frequency in everyday organizational life and their perceived contradictory nature.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Including the active participation and moderation of a workshop by the team of organizational psychology, the first annual conference of the <a href="https://kompetenzzentrum-ressource.de/" target="_blank" class="externalLink" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">“RessourcE” project</a> took place at Martinsclub Bremen. During the two-day event, inter-company perspectives, challenges and design perspectives in the area of “partial qualification” as well as “qualification needs and concepts” and practice-oriented topics such as learning and digital methods were discussed.</p><p><br> The organizational psychology team, consisting of<a href="mailto:julian.decius@uni-bremen.de" class="mail" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail"> Dr. Julian Decius</a>, <a href="mailto:annelie.lorber@uni-bremen.de" class="mail" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Annelie Lorber</a> and <a href="mailto:hannahlouisa.krueger@uni-bremen.de" class="mail" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Hannah Louisa Krüger</a>, led the workshop “Recognizing Competence Potential through AI: From Assessment to Development in Logistics and Care” and was able to engage in a successful, productive exchange with representatives from research and practice. The results were promising: Together, several factors were identified that promote acceptance when introducing an AI tool. In addition, potential psychological predictors for identifying leadership potential in employees in unskilled work were collected. These results will be incorporated into the further development of the AI-based tool for developing potential in unskilled work.</p><p><br> The organizational psychology team would like to thank everyone involved for contributing their various areas of expertise and perspectives to the discussion.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius, Lorenz Decius, and Prof. Dr. Simon Beausaert (Maastricht University) have developed a new theoretical model of work-related informal learning, which has now been published in the renowned journal Human Resource Development Review (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF</abbr> = 4.6).</p><p>The article, entitled “<em>Integrating Multiple Theoretical Perspectives on Informal Field-based Learning: The Self-regulated Informal Learning Cycle (SILC)</em>” is dedicated to the question of how informal workplace learning can be better understood by integrating motivational, behavioral, and cognitive perspectives. A new model is presented that distinguishes five phases of learning: preparation phase, action phase, encoding and consolidation phase, performance phase, and self-appraisal phase.</p><p>Particular emphasis is placed on the role of cognitive and metacognitive processes, as well as the time dimension, which has often been neglected in previous models.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On January 20, 2025, students in the bachelor's module in organizational and business psychology, led by Dr. Julian Decius, were guests in Berlin at the transformation consultancy HRpepper. During the winter semester, the students had reviewed literature and conducted interviews with employees and managers from various organizations in order to assess the empirical evidence base of the “Learning Culture Framework” and to provide specific recommendations for further developing the framework. The “Learning Culture Framework” is a model representing the factors of a conducive learning culture in organizations, which was developed and is distributed by Lernhacks, the second partner company of the teaching cooperation. Upon invitation by HRpepper, the final presentation took place on site in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The work group of Organizational Psychology would like to thank Dr. Laura Creon of HRpepper, Dr. Thomas Tillmann and Alicia Novacek of Lernhacks, and last but not least, the dedicated students of the seminar for the fruitful teaching cooperation.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius and Dr. Miriam Schilbach (Maastricht University) have published a research article in the journal Scientometrics (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF </abbr>= 3.5).</p><p>Their study examines the effects of shared first authorship (Shau) on the perception of academic career success in selection processes. While Shau is becoming increasingly common in research, concerns remain regarding its impact on individual recognition. Is the first-named author perceived as receiving more credit? Is recognition for a publication equally divided between Shau authors? And could Shau be a disadvantage in hiring decisions? To address these questions, the authors conducted an experimental vignette study in which academic participants evaluated the résumés of fictitious applicants.</p><p>The findings show that shared first authorship does not pose a disadvantage, as both first- and second-named Shau authors were evaluated equally. Moreover, sole first authorship does not provide an advantage, as it was not perceived as more successful than Shau authorship. Additionally, Shau promotes fair recognition, as clear labeling ensures that shared first authorship does not lead to lower appreciation. The results suggest that common concerns about potential disadvantages of Shau may be unfounded.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius, together with Prof. Dr. Simone Kauffeld (Technische Universität Braunschweig) and Prof. Dr. Carolin Graßmann (VICTORIA University), has guest-edited a Special Issue in the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology (<abbr title="Impact Factor">IF </abbr>= 4.0).</p><p>The Special Issue, titled “Learning and transfer in organizations: How it works and can be supported" explores key questions on the promotion and implementation of learning and knowledge transfer in organizational contexts. In an increasingly dynamic work environment, the development of competencies and their practical application are becoming ever more critical.</p><p>The nine contributions in this Special Issue examine different learning approaches, including formal, informal, and self-regulated learning, as well as the role of leadership, social support, and organizational structures in facilitating knowledge transfer. Additionally, new methodological approaches and empirical findings on the effectiveness of learning and transfer processes are presented.</p><p>The Editorial, written by the guest editors, provides an overview of the key topics covered in the Special Issue. It highlights the methodological diversity of the included studies, which utilize quantitative, qualitative, network analysis, and review-based approaches to generate new insights into learning and transfer.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At this year's spring conference of the Society for Work Sciences (GfA) at RWTH Aachen University, the Organizational Psychology team was represented with several contributions and was able to provide exciting insights into ongoing research work. The focus was on the work in the BMBF-funded <a href="https://kompetenzzentrum-ressource.de/" target="_blank" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">RessourcE</a> project, which deals with qualification, further training and health-promoting work design in the logistics and care service sectors.</p><p>An overview of the contributions:</p><ul class="list-normal"><li><a href="mailto:hannahlouisa.krueger@uni-bremen.de" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Hannah Louisa Krüger</a> presented evaluation results of a training intervention to promote work-related learning when using AI-based chat applications such as ChatGPT and Copilot.</li><li><a href="mailto:annelie.lorber@uni-bremen.de" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Annelie Lorber</a> presented a concept at the symposium “Simple work in services as a challenge in labour research” (chaired by Dr. Peter Bleses and Dr. Wolfgang Ritter) that can be used to identify further training potential for employees in simple work - using the logistics sector as an example.</li><li>The Organizational Psychology team also co-authored the poster contribution “Challenges in the development of an intelligent system for identifying the potential of employees in low-skilled work” by Fenja Hesselmann from Jade University of Applied Sciences Wilhelmshaven/Oldenburg/Elsfleth - a contribution that addresses the central challenges of data-based potential identification and reflects important aspects of our own research work.</li></ul><p>In addition to the presentations, the conference offered numerous opportunities to exchange ideas with colleagues from other projects such as <a href="https://kompetenzzentrum-kreis.de/" target="_blank" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">KREIS</a> and other regional competence centers - an inspiring environment for interdisciplinary knowledge transfer and networking.</p><p>Many thanks to the organizing team at RWTH Aachen University for three insightful days!</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the summer semester of 2025, students in the Bachelor's project module "Applied Organizational Psychology" led by Dr. Julian Decius worked on a practice-oriented topic focused on the evidence-based development of work-related learning in organizations. The cooperation partner for this semester was DB InfraGO. The aim of the seminar was to identify and analyze mechanisms that promote learning within organizational contexts. To achieve this, academic literature was reviewed and combined with qualitative findings from interviews conducted with employees of Deutsche Bahn. The students worked in three groups, each focusing on a different perspective: that of the learners, the trainers, and the organization itself.</p><p>The final presentation took place on June 30, 2025, at the invitation of the cooperation partners Julia Schultheis, Kathrin Denzer, and Nora Bauer at DB InfraGO’s Learning and Development Center in Maschen near Hamburg. In addition to presenting their results, the students were given a guided tour of the adjacent marshalling yard, offering valuable insights into railway infrastructure operations. The Field of Work Organizational Psychology extends its sincere thanks to the representatives of DB InfraGO and all those involved for the successful collaboration and their shared commitment to practice-oriented university teaching.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius, together with his co-authors Michael Knappstein (International University) and Andreas Seifert (Paderborn University), examined how two different forms of informal workplace learning develop over time. In a cross-lagged panel study, it was shown that self-based learning (experimenting and reflecting) predicts later social-based learning (seeking feedback and modeling)—but not the other way around. The study design comprised 321 employees, three measurement points, and time intervals of four weeks each. The central implication is that investments in personal exploration and reflection can foster subsequent social learning in the workplace. For organizational interventions, this means that companies should first enable safe experimentation and guided reflection in order to naturally encourage high-quality feedback behavior and modeling. Krüger</a> also presented the paper “A Conservation of Resources Lens on Knowledge Sharing and Knowledge Hiding in Vulnerable Workers” in the above-mentioned symposium.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="mailto:julian.decius@uni-bremen.de" class="e-mail-link" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Dr. Julian Decius</a>, together with Katharina Klug (University of Bremen) and Dr. Anahí Van Hootegem (University of Canterbury, New Zealand; KU Leuven, Belgium), has published a new article in the <em>Scandinavian Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology</em>.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The study used large archival data from the European Working Conditions Survey, covering about 34,000 employees in 2015 and 60,000 employees in 2021. Taking a person-centered perspective, three recurring profiles of economic stressors were identified: low, subjective-dominant, and high. The key findings show a clear and significant gradient: the higher the economic stress, the lower the likelihood of participating in workplace training – and the lower the level of mental well-being. In countries where the “subjective-dominant” profile is more common, overall training participation is also lower.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>For practice, three main implications emerge:</p><ul class="list-normal"><li><strong>Remove barriers:</strong> reduce costs and time requirements for training.</li><li><strong>Target outreach:</strong> actively include vulnerable groups such as part-time employees, those with short tenure, lower formal education, or blue-collar jobs.</li><li><strong>Increase feasibility:</strong> design short, job-embedded learning formats with supportive measures to build confidence.</li></ul><p>&nbsp;</p><p>At the country level, results mostly showed no additional moderation effects (only one very small and inconsistent interaction for well-being).                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Generative AI such as ChatGPT can be a powerful tool—if you know how to ask the right questions.                             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Participation at the AOWI25 in Lüneburg</strong></p><p>From September 10–12, 2025, the Organizational Psychology team successfully participated in the 13th Conference of the Work, Organizational, and Economic Psychology Specialist Group of the German Psychological Society, held at Leuphana Universität Lüneburg. With the theme “Changing Work Environments: Cooperation Between Humans and Technology”, the conference provided engaging insights into the latest research and opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange.</p><p>The team contributed through several presentations:</p><p><strong><a href="mailto:julian.decius@uni-bremen.de" class="e-mail-link" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Dr. Julian Decius</a></strong>, together with Prof. Dr. Simone Kauffeld (TU Braunschweig), organized the double symposium “Learning in a Changing Work Environment”, consisting of Part 1: “Forms of Learning and Support Contexts” and Part 2: “Artificial Intelligence on the Rise”. Within the symposium, he also presented the conceptual paper “Rethinking Bandura: Developing the Human-AI Social Cognitive Theory”. In addition, he actively contributed to the practice forum “Connecting the Dots: How AI is Transforming Work-Related Learning – Insights from Science and Practice”, which he co-prepared with Dr. Laura Creon (HRpepper), Dr. Michèle Rieth (University Bremen), and Prof. Dr. Franziska Schölmerich (SRH Berlin).</p><p><strong><a href="mailto:annelie.lorber@uni-bremen.de" class="e-mail-link" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Annelie Lorber</a></strong> presented on “Informal Workplace Learning and Employee Green Behavior: A Motivational Perspective” in the symposium “Psychological Perspectives on Environmental Sustainability at Work”, organized by Agnieszka Paruzel (University Bielefeld).</p><p><strong><a href="mailto:hannahlouisa.krueger@uni-bremen.de" class="e-mail-link" title="Opens a window for sending an e-mail">Hannah L.                             <title>Learning scales now easier and more accessible for practical use</title>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Julian Decius (University of Bremen), together with Niclas Schaper and Andreas Seifert (Paderborn University) as well as Michael Knappstein (International University), has published two scales on informal learning in the workplace in GESIS’s “Collection of Social Science Items and Scales” (ZIS). Previously, the German-language item formulations were available only in the appendices of the English-language original publications. Guidance on evaluation and handling was accessible exclusively in English.<br>ZIS now provides fully German-language explanations on application, evaluation, and interpretation, supplemented by practice-relevant materials. This considerably facilitates immediate use in organizational practice—especially in HR, personnel development, and practice-oriented research, for example for needs-based surveys, monitoring, and the systematic derivation of development measures. At the same time, the central, openly accessible provision lowers barriers to implementation, creates clarity in procedures, and promotes consistent, traceable use.<br><br>For both scales, a transparency certificate from the German Diagnostics and Test Committee confirms complete, standard-compliant documentation and thus provides a reliable basis for informed decisions, quality assurance, and comparability.</p><p>The ZIS entries are available here, both the <a href="https://doi.org/10.6102/zis359" target="_blank" class="external-link" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">long scale</a>&nbsp;and the <a href="https://doi.org/10.6102/zis360" target="_blank" class="external-link" title="Opens external link in new window" rel="noreferrer">short scale</a>.</p>]]></content:encoded>

                            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span lang="EN-US" dir="ltr">Annelie Lorber and Dr. Julian Decius (shared first authorship) have published a commentary in the journal </span><i><span lang="EN-US" dir="ltr">Industrial and Organizational Psychology</span></i><span lang="EN-US" dir="ltr"> (Impact Factor: 4.3). The article responds to and complements the focal article by Clara Kühner, Joachim Hüffmeier, and Hannes Zacher by highlighting the double-edged role of informal learning for ecological sustainability in organizations.</span></p><p><span lang="EN-US" dir="ltr">On the one hand, informal learning can help disseminate “green” knowledge and promote sustainable behavior in the workplace. On the other hand, the same informal channels can also spread skepticism and resistance to sustainable practices among employees.
