Admission

When applying for the ProMat master's programme the following documents have to be submitted:

• a document proving the current studying achievement and examination performance of min. 140 CP/ECTS completed by the time of application. The applicant's bachelor's programme has to be in one of the STEM fields, but it does not have to be completed at the time of application.
• an average grade by the time of application of at least 2.0 according to the German grading system.
• knowledge of the English language at least equivalent to the B2 GER level.
• knowledge of the German language at least equivalent to the B2 GER level.
• a letter of motivation and an essay (max. 2 pages) outlining your study objectives and research interests.

The listed documents and requirements are enough and adequate for a successful application. The documents proving the admission requirements have to be handed in within two weeks after the lectures have started.

The max. two-pages essay should include the following:

• a summary (up to half a page) of previous scientific work: e.g. the bachelor thesis, other assignment or homework completed during the bachelor studies,
• the presentation of one's own research interests and ideas to be pursued within the framework of the study programme.

The motivation letter should explain the applicant's interest in studying ProMat including the following:

• an ellaboration on how the ProMat master's programme will enhance the applicant's personal subject-related and professional knowledge and skills.
• a recognisable and clear motivation to study in a research-oriented manner within the framework of the MAPEX research landscape,
• a short presentation of the applicant's individual qualifications (e.g. prices or awards) as well as the desired career goals with respect to the ProMat curricular content.
• to name a potential mentor to supervise and advise the applicant during the master's studies including the first steps in his/her research career.

The application for the ProMat master's programme is carried out via the online application platform of the University of Bremen, MOIN, and takes approximately 20-25 minutes:

Step 1: In the online application form the following information needs to be included:

• Personal data (e.g. name, date of birth, address)
• information on the applicant's previous school and education (e.g. degree, completion date, grade)
• information on the applicant's previous studies (university name, degree, grade)

Step 2: In the upload area the following documents need to be submitted digitally as PDF-documents:

• Bachelor's degree (if programme completed at the time of application),
• transcript of records,
• curriculum vitae,
• motivation letter,
• the two-pages essay.

Only after receiving the letter of acceptance, the original documents need to be presented in hard copy.

For a successful application to the ProMat master´s programme, the applicants must prove English and German language skills at the C1 level minimum (as of winter semester 23/24: German C1 & English B2). The language knowledge, skills and competences are classified according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The selection committee carries out the selection of applicants and students based on the criteria specified in the admission regulation:

• the overall grade/GPA of the applicant's previous degree (60% of the overall assessment),
• the max. two-pages essay (30% of the overall assessment),
• the motivation letter (10% of the overall assessment).

The number of new students per semester is not restricted.

MAPEX merges the know-how of 800 scientific and technical staff, 430 of which are doctoral candidates. The about 60 Principal Investigators and 30 Early Career Investigators are affiliated to five different university faculties and four external research institutes on the university campus and are eligible to mentor the students of the ProMat master´s programme.
