Cooperative Research

The eleven partners of the Bremen Research Alliance are working closely together in research. Whether in joint research projects or in institutionalized form such as the MAPEX Center for Materials and Processes or the DFG Research Center and the Cluster of Excellence MARUM. A few examples are presented below.

MARUM - cooperative Success

Three years after the founding of the Department of Geosciences, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (1989) approved the special research area 261 on "The South Atlantic in the Late Quaternary - Reconstruction of Substances and Power Systems" at the University of Bremen. As a result, plans were developed in the early 1990s together with the then Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar Research (AWI) and later the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (MPI) and the Leibniz Center for Marine Tropical Research (ZMT) , In order to strengthen the marine sciences and has since been implemented in the cooperation:


In 2001, the DFG Research Center> Ozeanränder <was founded as one of the first three research centers financed by the DFG in Bremen. Five years later, GLOMAR's "Global Change in the Marine Realm" graduate school, funded by the Excellence Initiative, followed. The MARUM "The Ocean in the Earth System" cluster of excellence was granted shortly afterwards. In 2007, the DFG Research Center was launched, which was further promoted as a Cluster of Excellence in the further rounds of the Excellence Initiative. Through new structures, the MARUM 2012 is awarded the status of a Research Faculty at the University of Bremen.

The aim of the Cluster of Excellence is to better understand the role of the ocean in the global Earth system by means of geoscientific studies. The Cluster of Excellence and the DFG Research Center work together under the umbrella of the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen and in close cooperation with other university institutions and renowned partners. Robots for exploring foreign planets - FT-Utah

In the project FT-Utah (Field Trials Utah), the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center, headed by Prof. Dr. Frank Kirchner, together with scientists from the University of Bremen, used robots to explore alien planets. Part of the project was the four-week field test in the Utah desert, where various robotic systems were tested outside the laboratory in a natural, unstructured environment and simulated a complete mission sequence together with a control station stationed in Bremen.

B-Human - World Champion from Bremen

Five times world champion and eight European champions - that is the impressive record of the robot soccer team B-Human, since it started in 2009 in the standard platform league of the RoboCups. Also in 2016, the joint team of the University of Bremen and Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler headed DFKI research area Cyber-Physical Systems to bring both titles back to Bremen. The successful team currently consists of 10 NAO robots and 19 students from the University of Bremen as well as the supervisors Dr. Thomas Röfer from DFKI and Dr. Tim Laue from the University of Bremen.
