The freely moving platform in the FACE laboratory (Facility for Attitudes Control Systems) is used to test bearing systems for satellites.

At the DLR Institute of Space Systems in Bremen, we design, analyze and evaluate future spacecraft and space missions with regard to their technical performance and costs. This includes carrier systems, orbital and exploration systems, and satellites. For system design and system analysis, we use state-of-the-art methods of multi-disciplinary engineering, e.g. A computerized device for simultaneous design.
We also develop, build and operate our own spacecraft and missions for scientific research and technology demonstrations. This work is done in cooperation with other DLR institutes and research institutes. These are, for example, To small satellites and planetary landing craft.
We are a competence center for systems engineering with the abilities of system design, system integration and system tests. This is why we have a coordinating and integrating role in the development process.
In order to enable future space missions or to improve existing technologies, we are researching system-relevant technologies. For example, the behavior and influence of cryogenic fuels in tanks, landing technologies, railway and storage systems, avionics systems and high-precision optical measurement systems.
