Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) GmbH

A research dive on the coral reef (Lombok, Indonesia).

Since 1991, the Leibniz Center for Marine Tropical Research (ZMT) has been devoting itself to teaching and research on a better understanding of tropical coastal ecosystems. Questions on the structure and functioning of these habitats, on resource use and on resistance to human interventions and natural changes are at the center. The ZMT works interdisciplinarily and combines natural and social sciences research fields. The research projects are carried out in close cooperation with tropical partners. In addition, the scientists of the ZMT support the establishment of expertise and structures in the tropics, which enable sustainable coastal zone management. In cooperation with the University of Bremen, Jacobs University and the University of Oldenburg, the institute trains students and young scientists from all over the world in marine tropical research. Since 2009 the institute is a member of the Leibniz Association. More than 200 employees, students and guest researchers are currently working at the ZMT.
