Bildungsausländer are applicants,

  • who have no EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) or Swiss citizenship, and
  • whose educational certificates or university entrance qualifications do not come from Germany.

Application for an undergraduate degree

Bildungsausländer must apply for an undergraduate degree (Bachelor, First Law Examination / State Examination) at uni-assist, where their documents and language certificates are checked. The certificate evaluation and examination of the application documents is subject to a charge (75 euro for the first university, 30 euro for each additional one). To prepare students for their studies, the University of Bremen offers applicants a program of preparatory studies.

Preparatory Studies Assessment Examination

Bildungsausländer, who have passed an assessment examination in the frame of preparatory studies acquire a subject-related university entrance qualification. To apply, contact the Office for Student Affairs directly.

Student Visa

In order to be able to study at the University of Bremen, Bildungsausländer must apply for a visa at a German diplomatic representation in their home country. The respective foreign representations can be found at

For most countries, the visa must be applied for prior to entry. Since issuing the visa often takes several months, it is important to take care of it at an early stage. A fee of 60 euro is charged for issuing the visa. In addition to the submission of documents (as a rule, passport, applicant confirmation, health insurance), the prospective student must supply evidence of having suffiecient funds to finance a year’s stay in Germany (currently 8640 euro). However, sometimes evidence of a higher sum may be required.
