Recognition of Foreign Academic Certificates for Doctoral Students

If the academic degree was obtained abroad, the foreign educational certificates must be recognized for admission to doctoral studies and enrollment as a doctoral candidate.

Your first contact person is the faculty, in which you will be pursuing your doctorate. First of all, please send your documents to the faculty, which will then pass it to the International Office with a confirmation of cost coverage (110 Euro and announcement of the cost center). The issue deadline for the evaluation normally amounts 4 weeks after all relevant documents have been received by the International Office. In exceptional circumstances, however, the deadline may be extended.

The following documents are needed for the processing of the evaluation:

  • Photocopies of all university diplomas in the original language (e.g. bachelor , master, and possibly doctoral degree certificate)
  • Photocopies of German translation of all university diplomas produced by a certified translator (does not apply to foreign certificates of education in English ), and
  • Photocopies of an overview of all subjects and marks in the original language

After examination of the submitted documents, the faculty will be informed about the result. The examination result is only to be used within the respective university.
