Program-specific requirements

The bachelor's program in Business Studies provides an intensive methodological training  in addition to the fundamentals of business studies and economics during the first half of the study program. By choosing a major and undergoing a sound empirical training, the study is continued in the second half of the study.

In the subject-specific context of the major studies, key competencies such as scientific work and teamwork are taught.

The bachelor's degree program in Business Studies is divided into a total of six areas of study:

1. Business Studies comprising the modules:

• Accounting and Accounts
• Marketing
• Finance and Investment
• Human Resource Management and Organization
• Value Creation Processes and
• Company Taxation or International Business.

2. Economics comprising the modules:

• Microeconomics and
• Macroeconomics.

3. Data Literacy comprising the modules:

• Mathematics
• Data Analysis
• Statistics
• Data Management and
• Empirical Training.

4. Major with the following profiles, one of which must be selected:

• Finance, Accounting and Taxation
• Marketing and
• General Management.

5. Module Bachelor Thesis:

• Bachelor Thesis.

6. General Studies with the teaching of key competencies that complement the subject of study:

• WiWi Onboarding Challenge
• Law
• Project Management
• Sustainable Management and
• other electives such as language courses.

The Business Studies program is studied as a six-semester full-time program and thus has a scope of 180 credit points (CP). One CP corresponds to a working time of 25 to 30 hours.

Module

The program starts with a basic education that integrates both business and economics modules. These subjects are supplemented by intensive methodological training (Data Literacy). In the fourth semester, students opt for one out of three majors. Within the major, the focus is placed on research-based learning, which is particularly the case in the project module. One of the following three semester major profiles must be selected:

• Finance, Accounting and Taxation
• Marketing and
• General Management.
   

The specialized studies are supplemented by the General Studies area. This area offers the possibility to integrate language courses, additional professional qualifications or practice-oriented courses in its electives. The compulsory modules in the General Studies area supplement the specialized training with further modules for the acquisition of professionally relevant skills.

The program is usually completed in the sixth semester with the bachelor's thesis, which is usually thematically related to the chosen major.

The range of subjects in the Business Studies program and in the Economics program is identical in the first two semesters, so that a change of programs is possible until the third semester without risking a delay in the overall study time.

The Business Studies contains the majors:

Within the chosen major profile, a clear research and practical reference to current business issues is established.

English-language courses are often integrated into the course offerings of a major. For this reason, proof of language proficiency at the B2 level is recommended at the beginning of the fourth semester.

In the bachelor's program in Business Studies, the General Studies area includes compulsory subjects that supplement the specialized studies with courses which convey general competencies for professional qualification. These include: Law, Sustainable Management, and Project Management. At the very beginning of their studies, students take the WiWi Onboarding Challenge module. This module facilitates the start of studies by means of guided learning on a practical object using current topics: In groups, the first-semester students work on a task in their first week at university, for which they get to know different professional perspectives. The Onboarding Challenge takes up the entire first week; all other courses in the first year of study thus begin one week later.

In the elective area of General Studies, students can choose from a range of different subjects (foreign language courses, offers for career orientation, study techniques, and subject-specific supplements such as Introduction to Psychology).

Internships are part of the study program. In order to receive credit points (12 CP) for an internship, it must be of at least eight weeks' duration and can be completed at the earliest following the lecture period of the second semester. An internship report must be submitted by a specified deadline. Students are supported in their search for internships by the faculty's own career portal "7Careers" or by the central Career Center of the University of Bremen. Note: Internships that were completed before the start of studies cannot be recognized. A completed apprenticeship can be credited.

Practice-relevant competencies can also be gained in the following formats. The Praxis Summer Camp (6 CP / General Studies) is an intensive 3-week format with a high level of practical relevance during the lecture- and exam-free period in August of each year. Various companies of different industries and sizes bring in real-life project tasks, which are worked on by small student teams (max. 5 students). A large part of the time is spent working directly in the company. The teams work together in German and English, often on an interdisciplinarily and with students from our international partner universities.

The faculty maintains intensive contacts with companies and offers students, among other things, the Faculty Career Day in November. The Faculty Career Day is a career fair that offers contact with companies within the rooms of the faculty. Another hands-on format, Career Camp, is always held at the end of the non-lecture period of the winter semester. It is an intensive career week centered around career entry, career orientation and networking with potential employers.

Semesters abroad are not mandatory - however, they are recommended and the faculty supports and advises its students when they plan to study abroad. The faculty maintains more than 80 cooperations with partner universities in the Erasmus area and worldwide (Africa, Asia, South and North America). We also offer various scholarship opportunities, such as for our partner University of the Freestate in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Students who receive a place at this university can expect a DAAD-ISAP scholarship of over 900 euros plus a travel allowance. We also offer tuition-free stays at our U.S. partner universities such as the State University of New York at Binghamton or at Stony Brook.

Based on the recommended study plan, a semester abroad is best integrated into the fourth or fifth semester. The selected major offers a high degree of flexibility with regard to the recognition options. Thus, a semester abroad can usually be included in the study plan without delaying the study time. Assistance in organizing a semester abroad is offered by the faculty's Office of International Affairs.

The recognition of study achievements abroad is facilitated by the conclusion of Learning Agreements. To apply for a study abroad position, check the necessary foreign language requirements. Within the framework of the Erasmus program, the B2 level of the respective language of instruction at the host university must be proven. This B2 level must be proven by means of language certificates. Proof via the Abitur certificate is not sufficient.

The bachelor's program in Business Studies has a high attendance time in the first three semesters. Mostly, the classes are lectures, which are supplemented by exercises and tutorials. This comprehensive range of classes in the first semesters makes it easier for first-year students to start their studies. In the second half of the study program, the focus is on seminars and projects. Here, students are instructed in scientific and independent work, among other things. The final examination is the Bachelor's thesis.

The terms lecture (V), seminar (S), project (P), exercise (Ü) and tutorial (T) are used to describe the different types of courses.

Lectures are events in which a teacher lectures for the most part and students just listen. Especially in the first semesters, this type of course is often used due to the high number of participants. Within the exercises, individual topics and questions from the lecture are taken up and discussed in depth. Exercises are usually offered by the lecturers or by research assistants. Tutorials are courses led by students of higher semesters, which serve to deepen the contents of methodologically oriented subjects. Exercises and tutorials are only taken in conjunction with lectures. In the Business Studies program, lectures are sometimes supplemented by multimedia teaching units - Mobile Lectures.

In contrast to a lecture, seminars are more strongly oriented towards student participation. The topics of the seminar are discussed in class. Students can, for example, give presentations on the seminar topic. This type of course is primarily used in advanced studies.

In the project, students apply their previously acquired knowledge in solving case studies and subject-specific problems.

All examinations in the Business Studies bachelor’s program take place alongside the respective courses. One of the examination forms is the classic written examination whose duration differs depending on the course. This form of examination is mainly offered during the earlier semesters due to the generally large size of the cohorts. In some courses, electronic examinations ("eKlausur") are carried out in the Testcentre at the University of Bremen.

Oral examinations, presentations, assignments and projects are offered primarily in the later semesters. In many courses so called ‘Portfolios’ are admitted. These forms allow for ‘smaller’ examinations during the lecture period to be considered in the final grade.

When various examination forms are permissible within a course, the students will be informed at the beginning of the semester of which examination type will be carried out. The written and oral examinations take place following the lecture period.

After graduation, graduates of the bachelor's degree program in Business Studies have access to fields of activity in all sectors of the economy and in a wide variety of commercial professions in middle management. These include, for example, jobs in the service sector such as business consulting and auditing companies, in wholesale and retail companies, in industry, in banks and insurance companies, in national and international organizations, in the public sector, in political consulting, and in research. The respective fields of activity may depend on the chosen major and the topic of the bachelor thesis. Further professional qualification can take place in the everyday working life, e.g. through special trainee programs offered by companies.

The faculty maintains intensive contacts with companies and offers students various formats for professional orientation. For example, there is the Faculty Career Day, which is a practical fair that enables students to make contact with companies in the rooms of the faculty.

The graduate group "Diginomics - Digitization, Economy and Society" investigates entrepreneurial, ethical and socio-political issues for emerging or newly forming digital markets, value chains and organizations. Content includes issues related to blockchain, digital finance, artificial intelligence, and the platform economy. Likewise, work is being done on the development of innovative methods such as self-learning algorithms.
