Seminar (Teaching)

Dates:
weekly (starts in week: 1) Thu. 10:00 - 12:00 SFG 1010 (2 Teaching hours per week)

Course Content:

This course covers philosophical questions about cosmology and about the exploration of terra incognita related to space. First, we cover the meaning of exploration for mankind in general (exploration of new territories as well as of laws of the physical world and laws in general). Second, we specialize to questions related to space: What is the idea behind a finite or infinite world? What does the exploration of space mean for the “position” of mankind within the Universe, for the world view of human beings? What would it mean for mankind if the search for extraterrestrial life will be successful? In what sense can cosmology missions “uncover” the dynamics of the universe from the Big Bang to the far future? What concept of time is involved here and what counts as evidence and why?

Learning outcome/learning goals:

• Knowledge of basic notions from the philosophy of the natural sciences (natural law, space, time, infinity, …)
• Basic insights into the aims of scientific inquiry and the generation of scientific knowledge (by means of examples from the history of cosmology)
• Ideas involved in human self-understanding related to “other worlds” or extraterrestrial life
• Basic knowledge of cosmology.

04-M30-MP-1853Conceptional Design of a Neptune-Triton Pathfinder Mission

Projektplenum (Teaching)
ECTS: 12

The outer gas planets Uranus and Neptune are a different class of planets compared to the significantly larger and hotter Jupiter and Saturn. The scientific study of the outer planets yields insights into the formation and evolution of the planets in terms of physical and chemical processes as well as the history of the solar system. [Arridge 2012] proposed a medium-class Uranus Pathfinder mission in the framework of ESA's 2015 - 2025 Cosmic Vision programme.

The major goal of this MSc project will be an analogous study to explore the Neptune-Triton system. This includes a possible landing on the largest moon Triton. Major scientific topics in this sense are: (a) Neptune as an ice giant, (b) Neptune's highly asymmetric magnetosphere, (3) Triton as moon with unusual orbital parameters, (d) similarities between Triton and Pluto and a possible history of Triton as captured from the Kuiper belt [Agnor 2006]. It is expected to utilize a science payload with a strong heritage without the need for significant technology developments.

The following tasks are to be executed by a team of three to four students (space engineering, electrical engineering, information engineering or similar):

1) Execute a Phase 0/A study of a proposed "Neptune-Triton Pathfinder" mission. Assess feasibility of a multi-spacecraft exploration including landing on Triton with today's available technical capabilities.
1.1) Select an appropriate science payload. Include cruise-phase science if possible.
1.2) Perform relevant system engineering tasks, including requirements management & budgets
1.3) Do the mission analysis including launch windows, trajectories, radiation shielding, communication, thermal design
1.4) Lay out the preliminary S/C design down to subsystem level.
2) Summarize the results in a project white paper similar to [Arridge 2012].

04-M30-MP-1901Numerical Simulation of the Combustion in an Oxygen-Paraffin Hybrid Rocket Engine

Projektplenum (Teaching)
ECTS: 12

Basic idea:
A hybrid rocket motor, using Liquid Oxygen as oxidizer and Paraffin as fuel, is under development at the ZARM of the University of Bremen. Numerical simulation is a helpful tool for understanding this complex process. In order to further improve the design, the combustion process in the rocket motor will be simulated in the proposed master project.

Description of the project:
The combustion process in the “Zephyr” rocket motor and the accompanied flow field will be simulated by using a large eddy simulation (LES) method. The solver for the numerical simulation will be developed based on the open source CFD package OpenFoam 18.06. The motor is assumed to be 2-dimensional for the first step. A two-step chemical reaction mechanism will be used to account for the combustion process. The inlet oxygen jet, mixing and reaction in the combustion chamber, and supersonic flow in the nozzle will be analyzed based on the numerical results. The numerical results will be validated by the experimental data obtained at the ZARM.

We search for 3-6 students who:
• are interested in CFD simulations;
• are capable of team work;
• have knowledge of fluid mechanics.

We may offer:
• supervision of CFD simulation;
• training of using the CFD package OpenFoam;
• introduction of principle knowledge about numerical combustion;
• access to the computer cluster for middle-scale parallel computations.

04-SE-LP-1905Inbetriebnahme einer Nutzlast für studentische Experimente mit kalten Atomen
Commissioning of a Payload for Student Experiments with Cold Atoms

Projektplenum (Teaching)

At ZARM a payload for measuring accelerations using cold atoms was already integrated. During this project you will use this hardware to:
- Finalize the integration of the payload, apply minor changes to the setup if required
- Define requirements towards the control (software) of the payload
- Create a suitable control software for the payload in order to play sequences of e.g. switching on/off light (laser) or magnetic fields using Labview or similar tools
- Create an algorithm to interpret the measured data
Demonstrate first measurements in the lab and/or in a moving vehicle or a centrifuge
