4. How can we visualize gases, liquids and solids in simplified terms?
5. What is energy and why can it neither be created nor destroyed?
6. What is the difference between measured and perceived temperature?
7. Why do different substances feel differently ‘warm’?
8. What does entropy have to do with disorder?
9. Why do power stations have cooling towers?
10. Why does nothing burn in a water bath?
11. Why is cooking in high mountains a particular challenge?
12. Why does food cook faster in a pressure cooker?
13. How critical is the critical point?
14. How do gas turbines, steam power stations etc. work?
15. How does a refrigerator work?
16. Do heat pumps really have efficiencies of over 100%?
17. Why does 1 plus 1 not always equal 2 in thermodynamics?
18. Why do we spread salt on icy roads?
19. Why does a plume of fog briefly appear when we breathe out in winter?
20. How do portable air conditioners work?

During an intensive three-week project phase, interdisciplinary and sometimes international teams of students work in small groups on real-life tasks from companies and institutions.

Rough schedule:

April 11: Information event to introduce all projects and project partners
June 8: First application deadline to improve the chance of receiving a desired project.
June 13: Publication of remaining places
June 20: Deadline for applications for remaining places.
July 4: Publication of assignment to projects (team building)
until July 25: First meeting of the team members as well as getting to know each other and onboarding by project partners - preparation of the kick-off presentation
from July 28 - August 1: Preparatory workshops
July 31: Submission of the kick-off presentation
August 4: Joint kick-off event for all teams and companies. Presentation of the intro presentations - everyone gets to know each other!
August 4 - August 21: Individual project work in the teams (full-time = min. 30 hours/week) / in between mandatory and voluntary coaching appointments with the team of lecturers and 2-3 social after-work events. Goal: Submission of the final presentation (coordinated with the company) / final or detailed presentation in the company in advance
August 22: Final event with final presentations in front of all teams and companies as well as an interested audience. Followed by a social get-together.
