Inhalt: This course is a special offer for international students who are interested in Regional and Urban Geography, and the local history of Bremen and Northwest Germany.
  • Students understand the historical development of cities and the processes connecting historical events and urban development
  • Students understand the basic ideas of (Regional) and Urban Geography and History as a university science
  • Students understand the most important historical events that shaped today’s Germany
  • Students are able to give presentations about topics that they researched on their own (about an excursion destination as well as a unique city quarter of Bremen

Globally, tourism is of immense economic, cultural, ecological, and social importance. This general studies course will explore the impacts, benefits, and threats of tourism with a geographic focus on the tropics. The course will include introductions to participatory governance, sustainability science and environmental and development economics.

Lernziele/Kompetenzen (Learning Outcome):

Students will understand land use as a key global sustainability challenge and a nexus of various sustainability goals. They will gain an overview of land use systems and land use changes, their determinants, drivers and impacts, and of related research approaches. They will also get familiar with different visions for future land use and challenges of (more) sustainable land use management.


Inhalt:

The seminar will cover the following topics:
 Overview of land use systems
 Global and regional trends in land use
 Determinants and drivers of land use (change)
 Impacts of land use (change)
 Approaches of analysing land use changes and their drivers
 Land use as nexus of various sustainability goals
 Visions for future land use and challenges of sustainable land use management
Teaching formats: inputs by the lecturer, student presentations, group discussions, discussion of research papers
