Das Gedächtnis der „Anderen“: Frankophone Romane im Spannungsfeld von Kolonialismus, Krieg und Holocaust

Ausgehend von Michael Rothbergs Konzept der multidirektionalen Erinnerung und der kontroversen Debatte, die seine und andere Schriften zu neuen, inklusiven Erinnerungskulturen losgetreten haben, beschäftigen wir uns in diesem Seminar mit neueren Ansätzen zu kollektivem Gedächtnis, Erinnerungskulturen und postkolonialen Erinnerungspolitiken, die sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, wie bestimmte historische Ereignisse erinnert und zueinander in Bezug gesetzt werden (können). Im Fokus stehen frankophone Romane wie Michèle Maillets L’Étoile noire (Martinique), Natacha Appanahs Le dernier frère (Mauritius) und David Diops Frère d’âme (Frankreich / Senegal), die dynamische Prozesse der Erinnerung im Kontext post/kolonialer Geschichte thematisieren und unterschiedliche historische und kulturelle Erinnerungstraditionen zueinander in Bezug setzen und in einen dynamischen Austausch treten lassen. Kenntnisse der französischen Sprache sind nicht zwingend vonnöten, da wir die Texte in deutscher Übersetzung lesen werden. Die Studierenden sind eingeladen, eigene Primärtextvorschläge (aus der frankophonen Welt und darüber hinaus) in das Seminar einzubringen. Zu den Lernzielen gehört die Erarbeitung zentraler Schlüsseltexte zur Theoriedebatte sowie die Diskussion ihrer Relevanz für die Literaturwissenschaft. Durch die Analyse ausgewählter Romane werden wir die Anwendung dieser Ansätze auf konkrete literarische Texte erproben und vertiefen. Die Studienleistung besteht in der aktiven Teilnahme am Seminar sowie der Vorstellung eines Romans im Seminar. Prüfungsleistung ist eine Hausarbeit zum Seminarthema. This seminar explores the cultural and imaginative currents that shaped America in the long nineteenth century. Focusing on select cultural objects, such as nature writing, the slave narrative, and landscape paintings, we examine how land and bodies of water functioned as symbolic and material sites where questions of power, freedom, resistance, and national or cultural belonging were negotiated. Through a combination of textual analysis and cultural history, we will investigate how the American environment was represented, claimed, and contested in a century marked by expansion, conflict, and environmental and industrial transformation.

Das Gedächtnis der „Anderen“: Frankophone Romane im Spannungsfeld von Kolonialismus, Krieg und Holocaust
MA TnL Profilmodul Literatur, montags 14-16 ct.

Ausgehend von Michael Rothbergs Konzept der multidirektionalen Erinnerung und der kontroversen Debatte, die seine und andere Schriften zu neuen, inklusiven Erinnerungskulturen losgetreten haben, beschäftigen wir uns in diesem Seminar mit neueren Ansätzen zu kollektivem Gedächtnis, Erinnerungskulturen und postkolonialen Erinnerungspolitiken, die sich mit der Frage auseinandersetzen, wie bestimmte historische Ereignisse erinnert und zueinander in Bezug gesetzt werden (können). Im Fokus stehen frankophone Romane wie Michèle Maillets L’Étoile noire (Martinique), Natacha Appanahs Le dernier frère (Mauritius) und David Diops Frère d’âme (Frankreich / Senegal), die dynamische Prozesse der Erinnerung im Kontext post/kolonialer Geschichte thematisieren und unterschiedliche historische und kulturelle Erinnerungstraditionen zueinander in Bezug setzen und in einen dynamischen Austausch treten lassen. Kenntnisse der französischen Sprache sind nicht zwingend vonnöten, da wir die Texte in deutscher Übersetzung lesen werden. Die Studierenden sind eingeladen, eigene Primärtextvorschläge (aus der frankophonen Welt und darüber hinaus) in das Seminar einzubringen. Zu den Lernzielen gehört die Erarbeitung zentraler Schlüsseltexte zur Theoriedebatte sowie die Diskussion ihrer Relevanz für die Literaturwissenschaft. Durch die Analyse ausgewählter Romane werden wir die Anwendung dieser Ansätze auf konkrete literarische Texte erproben und vertiefen. Die Studienleistung besteht in der aktiven Teilnahme am Seminar sowie der Vorstellung eines Romans im Seminar. Prüfungsleistung ist eine Hausarbeit zum Seminarthema. Das Seminar richtet sich an Studierende des Masters Transnationale Literaturwissenschaft und der General Studies. Die unterschiedlichen Anforderungen werden in der ersten Sitzung besprochen.
