In the priority programme SPP 1480 "Modelling, Simulation and Compensation of Thermal Machining Influences for Complex Machining Processes - CutSim", funded by the DFG, the working groups from Prof. Schmidt and Prof. Maaß are involved in interdisciplinary collaboration. Together with engineers from the Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tools IFW in Hanover, they are developing a model that can predict the thermomechanical deformations during the machining of complex structural components and the associated geometric errors with high accuracy.

A discrete simulation model, with which the geometric changes of the workpiece can be calculated and the current contact geometries can be determined, is being built and combined with a finite element model to calculate the heat conduction and the workpiece deformation. The modelling approach will be valid for both continuous cutting processes (drilling) and discontinuous ones (milling). In addition to the thermomechanical deformation, the volume change due to material removal is taken into account in particular.
