EMAS Working Group

In 2017, the University celebrated its 20th anniversary of the Environmental Committee. The Environmental Committee, a committee with all professionals in environmental protection, could thus already look back on 20 years of successful work at the University of Bremen.

It all started at the end of 1995 with a list of demands from the students. At that time, the first measure demanded was an inventory of environmental pollution. It went on to include possibilities for saving energy and water, regular reporting, and the possibilities for separating recyclable materials and the careful handling of chemicals. The list of demands was very extensive.

The chancellor at the time, Gerd-Rüdiger Kück, was very serious about this commitment. He appointed Prof. Dr. Jastorff as environmental officer and charged him with the establishment of an environmental committee. Members at that time were the ASTA, the company physician, the occupational safety, the waste management officer, the staff council and other specialists from environmental protection. But the scientific community was also represented.

Work began at the end of 1996! The committee began with an inventory and published the first environmental report as early as 1997, which was updated for the first time in 2000. The introduction of an environmental management system in accordance with EMAS was discussed intensively in the committee and the first certification was successfully completed in 2004.

Then things continued in quick succession: environmental days were held, energy saving campaigns were organized, a company mobility management system was set up, in 2011 a solar cooperative was founded by employees for employees, in 2014 the Green IT Housing Center was opened and much more.

The environmental coordinator, Dr. Doris Sövegjarto-Wigbers, had frequently reported on the activities of the environmental committee nationally and also internationally in presentations in recent years. In the meantime, the much discussed E`s are in focus: renewable Energies, Energy saving and Energy efficiency.

In 2018, the Environmental Committee was being further developed by the establishment of a sustainability forum at the university. The tasks in the EMAS certified University of Bremen are now further accompanied by a working group EMAS.
