At the University of Bremen, the Faculty of Production Engineering (FB04) and the Department Process & Chemical Engineering (FG01) invites applications for the following academic position

-under the condition of job release-

PhD Researcher

Salary level 13 TV-L (100%), start date: as soon as possible

Reference number: A283/18

The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 (1) (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG. The position is available for three years.

In the field of

“High Throughput Designing of Aggressive Organometallic Precursor-Solvent Combinations for Single Droplet Combustion”

Background: The Faculty of Production Engineering, University of Bremen is well known through its cutting edge research in the areas of particle production, their use in different applications and designing reactors/machines for specific material engineering. We are looking forward to establish the next level gas-phase technologies for the production of sulfide/nitride nanomaterials through environmentally friendly and safer engineering processes. The Faculty of Production Engineering closely co-operates with the Leibniz Institute for Materials Engineering (IWT), an independent interdisciplinary research institute with a focus on materials science, manufacturing technology and chemical & process engineering.

Your Task: While remarkable knowledge for designing metal oxides nanoparticles and their application has been acquired in the past, the productions of sulfides/nitrides have not yet been as successful. Through this position you will bring reactive spray technology to the next level and advance from metal oxide nanoparticles to sulphide/nitride materials. You will utilize fast, safe and versatile high throughput single droplet combustion screening processes which will be used to design spray reactors for the synthesis of novel metastable binary and/or complex multi-metal sulphides/nitrides. You will investigative possible precursor-solvent combinations, reaction conditions and process models for this new class of reactive sprays.

Required qualifications:

You have an above-average degree in engineering or natural sciences with a focus on chemical and materials engineering. Basic knowledge in the field of aerosol combustion, solution chemistry, laser spectroscopy and material characterization techniques (XRD, TEM and BET), knowledge of reactor design/housing are required. Through your master’s thesis, you have proven your ability to work independently. The national and international co-operation within the project requires fluency in English and German languages. Knowledge of the MS Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. Strong knowledge of MATLAB and CAD4 for machine design is desirable.

  • A degree in materials science, Chemistry and engineering and/or physics.
  • Sound knowledge in aerosol combustion, solution chemistry, laser spectroscopy and material characterization techniques
  • Strong knowledge of MATLAB is desirable
  • Knowledge of reactor design/housing is a plus
  • Excellent academic record and ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English while communication skill in German is helpful

What we offer: You will have the opportunity to work independently in innovative research areas such as spray technologies and materials chemistry under close supervision of experts in their field. You will be working to establish next-level spray technology utilizing modern instruments and laser spectroscopic technique. As part of your research work, you will have intensive contact with national and international research institutes and universities through collaborations, visits and conferences. We offer a team-oriented, future- and practice-oriented research environment with the possibility of scientific qualification and doctorate.

The University of Bremen has received a number of awards for its diversity policies and offers a family-friendly working environment as well as an international atmosphere.

The University is committed to a policy of gender equality for employment opportunities. Therefore, women are encouraged to apply for the offered position. Persons with disabilities will be considered preferentially in case of equal qualifications and aptitudes.

The University of Bremen explicitly invites persons with a migration background to apply.
