ABOUT THE DATA SNACKS

Ensuring the responsible handling of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) is a crucial aspect of the research process. In fact, the adoption of a sustainable data management strategy has become essential for the success of third-party funding proposals (e.g. requirements of the DFG).

With the Data Snacks, we invite you to a culinary data break served in four short sessions to share our love for research data. The menu revolves around different challenges in data management. Embark on a delightful journey with us, exploring FAIR data in digital humanities, uncovering the secrets of the Nagoya Protocol, indulging in data licences, and venturing into the realm of data publishing.

WHAT’S THIS SESSION ABOUT?

Galaxy is an open-source platform that empowers researchers across disciplines to analyze, manage, and share data without requiring programming expertise. It is widely adopted across life sciences, environmental research, astrophysics, and beyond. Galaxy offers an intuitive web interface with thousands of integrated tools, making complex data workflows accessible, reproducible, and sharable. Beyond analysis, Galaxy streamlines Research Data Management (RDM) by supporting the entire data life cycle from import and processing to secure storage, sharing, and long-term archiving and reproducibility.

Researchers can connect to sequencing facilities (eLAB, LIMS) or integrate cloud storage solutions like Nextcloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox, among others. Galaxy's publishing and archiving capabilities allow for sharing datasets, workflows, and results via Zenodo or export to remote resources while maintaining flexible access controls. Additionally, Galaxy provides interactive tools such as Jupyter Notebook and RStudio, facilitating machine learning, visualization, and workflow development.

With over 125,000 researchers using the European Galaxy server, the platform is a robust, scalable gateway for data-driven research. Whether handling large datasets, developing machine learning models, or automating analyses, Galaxy simplifies the process, ensuring that research remains transparent, reproducible, and impactful. In this session, I'll introduce Galaxy, its key features, and how it enhances research across scientific domains.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Srikakulam is a scientific researcher and one of the administrators of the Galaxy Europe platform at the University of Freiburg. He specializes in bioinformatics, research infrastructures, cloud technologies, and high-performance computing. He develops and maintains scalable infrastructure, drives automation, and contributes to EU-funded initiatives such as the EuroScienceGateway, advancing reproducible, data-driven research across Europe.

WHERE AND WHEN?

The info event will take place from 1:00 to 1:30pm via Zoom. There will be a 15-20 minute presentation followed by an open forum for questions and discussion. We look forward to exciting discussions!
