Resource Reconnaissance for Future Crewed Missions to Mars

Location: Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM)
Begin: 27.11.2025, 14:00
End: 27.11.2025, 15:00
Bremen Human Space Exploration Seminar
Guest:  Dr. Christoph Gross

Mars bears abundant raw materials that are of potential value for future human activities. The identification and the nature of these natural resource deposits, their concentration, and the practicality of extraction and processing remain open questions that require further investigation. The inherent geological diversity of ore deposits can greatly influence the viability of exploration sites and the engineering architecture. A thorough understanding of these characteristics is essential for the selection of potential mining sites and also for the choice and optimization of specific technical designs.

Dr. Christoph Gross is a researcher at Freie Universität Berlin with >17 years of experience in remote sensing of the Martian surface using various instruments. Originally focused on marine geochemistry and economic geology, he switched planets towards Mars. He is working on mineralogy and surface interpretation, 3D modeling and geo-spectral data merging. He is team member of the High-Resolution Stereo Camera on Mars Express and Co-I for the upcoming multispectral imager on ESA’ Lightship & Spotlight mission to Mars.
