Satellite observations and simulations of tropospheric halogens in a warming Arctic
The time limitation is subject to the scientific qualification according to the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 (1) (WissZeitVG – Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). Therefore, candidates may only be considered if they dispose of the respective scope of qualification periods according to §2 (1) WissZeitVG.
The department “Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere” of the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) of the University of Bremen is among the leading scientific institutions in the area of satellite remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases relevant for climate, air pollution and ozone chemistry. IUP is involved in the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) funded Transregio on Artic Amplifications (AC)3 (http://ac3-tr.de/), which investigates the impact of climate change in the Arctic.
The research of the PhD will focus on the role of tropospheric halogens in the warming Arctic. Once released into the lower atmosphere, a process influenced by local weather conditions, halogen compounds deplete ozone. As such, halogens indirectly impact on the radiative properties of the atmosphere and in turn temperature of the Arctic. The PhD will work on the extension, improvement and analysis of long-term halogen satellite data using new higher resolution UV-vis sensors such as Sentinel-5P (3.5x5.5 km2 footprint). The relationship between halogen plumes and sources and drivers at different spatial scales such as young sea ice, leads, meltponds, meso- to synoptic scale weather systems, which are expected to change in a warming climate, will be investigated in collaboration with other (AC)3 partners. Synergistic case studies will involve Lagrangian transport modelling.
- A master degree (or equivalent) in physics, meteorology or a related discipline with an average grade better than B (English grade) or 2.0 (German grade)
- Good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following fields: physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, meteorology, remote sensing of the Earth system, numerical modelling (experience with FLEXPART, ICON, or WRF is regarded as an asset)
- Very good knowledge of at least one higher programming language
- Strong interest in data analysis and atmospheric research
- Good knowledge in spoken and written English and / or German
- Good communication skills, cooperation with national and international partners is required
