University of Bremen Represented in DFG Executive Committee and Senate

The University of Bremen is now represented in Germany’s largest research support organization: Professor Kerstin Schill was elected as one of the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) Vice Presidents. Professor Michael Schulz is a new senate member.

The University of Bremen President, Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter congratulated them: “I am extremely pleased that the University of Bremen is strongly represented within the largest research support organization in Germany with Professor Kerstin Schill and Professor Michael Schulz. This is a great acknowledgement of the quality of research carried out at the University of Bremen and an honor for both researchers.”

Professor Kerstin Schill is taking over as Vice President from the Hannover physicist Professor Wolfgang Ertmer. The second new Vice President is the physician Professor Britta Siegmund from Berlin. Professor of engineering Frank Allgöwer was elected for a second term in office as Vice President along the two aforementioned academics. The executive committee develops the strategical-conceptual orientation of the DFG together with the President.

Professor Kerstin Schill Has Extensive DFG Experience

Kerstin Schill is a professor of computer science at the University of Bremen, where she has been head of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroinformatics since 2003 and was dean of the Faculty of Mathematics / Computer Science until 2018. She took on the role of President of the Institute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst in 2018. Kerstin Schill studied computer science at the Technical University of Munich and went on to complete her PhD in human biology at the LMU Munich. From 2012, she was initially active as a member of the scientific, self-governing DFG review board for computer science and then became a senate member in 2014. Since 2018, she has been part of the DFG expert commission “Sciences and Humanities in the Digital Age”.

Director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen

For the first time, Professor Michael Schulz was elected by the DFG general assembly as a new senate member. The marine scientist has been the director of MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Science at the University of Bremen since 2012. As a member and head of DFG senate commissions, he has been active in DFG statutory bodies since 2004.

Another 11 new members for the 39-person DFG senate were elected alongside Schulz. Professor Antje Boetius from the University of Bremen and director of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, left the senate.

About the DFG Senate

The DFG senate is the scientific-political statutory body of the DFG. The group deals with overarching research topics and advises governments, parliaments and authorities with scientifically founded statements. The senate emphasizes features in research planning by establishing focus programs and research groups.
