20 years have passed since the Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) was founded at the University of Bremen with support from the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The idea to establish a research focus in the area of political science on the development of global and intercultural conflicts has shown itself to be a far-sighted decision. Many of the Institute’s initial research topics are as relevant today as ever: Historical lines of confrontations long-thought to have been resolved have taken on a new topicality. And international terrorist networks present quite a new global challenge. Moreover, agreement on global environment policies has also become a more pressing issue than ever before, as the current negotiations at the Paris Climate Conference acutely underscore. The question as to how it will be possible to reach political solutions for global governance under such circumstances has always been at the core of the Institute’s research work.
Contribution to excellence
In the years since it was founded, the Institute has made a significant contribution to making the field of Political Science one of the University’s leading disciplines. As initiator and one of the institutes involved in the Collaborative Research Center “Transformations of the State” (2002 – 2014) and the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), one of Germany‘s most successful centers for the training of early-career academics, it also played an important role in the University of Bremen being admitted to the elite club of Excellence Universities.
New: DIETER SENGHAAS LECTURES
On December 10, 2015, the InIIS celebrated its milestone twentieth anniversary with a festive event in the Stadtwaage (Langenstraße), and on December 11 with a symposium held in the University. During the public ceremony in the Stadtwaage, Bremen’s Senator for Science, Professor Eva Quante-Brandt, and the Rector of the University of Bremen, Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, held the opening addresses. These was followed by a public lecture by Professor Klaus Dieter Wolf, member of the Management Board of the Foundation for Peace and Conflict Studies in Hesse. His talk titled “End or Repeat of History? World politics faces new challenges” was the kick-off lecture of the new lecture series “DIETER SENGHAAS LECTURES”, named in honor of the founder and long standing member of the InIIS, Prof.Dr.Dr.h.c. Senghaas, who is generally acclaimed to be among the world’s most prominent peace and conflict researchers.
