Academic Freedom in Conflict: Talk at House of Science

On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the fifth Book Talk hosted by the Worlds of Contradiction (WOC) research platform at the University of Bremen will focus on the freedom of science. Members of the WOC GradNet graduate network will discuss these issues at the House of Science.

How free is science? Is it under pressure or even threatened – and if so, by whom and how? These questions concern not only researchers as science shapes all of our daily lives, from technological innovations to education to political decisions. The question of the conditions for academic freedom is of general interest.

In the WOC Book Talk #5, focusing on the recently published volume Wissenschaftsfreiheit im Widerspruch (Academic Freedom in Conflict) by the WOC GradNet, Martin Herrnstadt will speak with Katharina Nowak, Jessica Nuske, and Jonas Trochemowitz, all of whom are part of the authors’ collective, about current debates and societal challenges surrounding academic freedom.

Following the discussion, the audience is warmly invited to join in, ask questions, and contribute their own perspectives. The event is open to anyone interested.
