Climate Researcher Veronika Eyring Is a Founding Director of “connAIx” Research School for Applied AI

Climate researcher Veronika Eyring will become the first founding director of the new state-funded “connAIx” Research School for Applied AI in Heilbronn. Her new professorship, “AI for Climate and Physical Systems,” will also be based at the University of Tübingen.

Veronika Eyring is one of Germany’s most renowned climate researchers. The professor of climate modeling at the University of Bremen in the Faculty of Physics / Electrical Engineering currently also heads the Department of Earth System Model Evaluation and Analysis at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Eyring is now moving to Baden-Württemberg: As the first of three founding directors of the connAIx Research School for Applied AI in Heilbronn, she has been appointed to the newly created chair in AI for Climate and Physical Systems. The chair will also be based at the Tübingen AI Center.

connAIx was launched in January 2026 by the state of Baden-Württemberg with support from the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and is jointly sponsored by the universities of Tübingen and Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). connAIx combines cutting-edge research with the training of exceptional doctoral candidates and early-career researchers for positions in research, industry, and startups. The focus is on future-oriented fields of applied AI such as chip design, robotics, and physical systems, as well as cybersecurity and sustainable AI.

Veronika Eyring is internationally renowned for her work on improving climate models using artificial intelligence and as the coordinating lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report. She has received numerous awards for her research, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation in 2021, the AGU Ambassador Award in 2024, and the Blaise Pascal Medal from the European Academy of Sciences in 2026.
