Rising sea levels and the consequences for society: The German Research Foundation (DFG) has agreed to fund four new projects at the University of Bremen in an amount of 1.4 million euros in the context of a new DFG Priority Program called “Regional Sea Level Change and Society”.
The successful project proposals reflect the interdisciplinary diversity of the new research program. Researchers at the University of Bremen will be involved in the following four thematic areas: (1) The effect of mountain glaciers on sea level change (Professor Ben Marzeion, Institute of Geography); (2) Measuring the three-dimensional distribution of melt water and its effect on the key climate-relevant regions of the North Atlantic (Professor Monika Rhein, Institute for Environmental Physics / Center for Marine Environmental Sciences MARUM); (3) Sea level changes in South East Asia (Dr. Alessio Rovere, Center for Marine Environmental Sciences MARUM / Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology ZMT); (4) political and societal reactions to rising sea levels in South East Asia (Professor Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology ZMT / Institute of Sociology,
and Professor Michael Flitner, Sustainability Research Center – artec / Institute of Geography). As sea level change is especially important for large cities like Jakarta, Singapore and Manila, the research will be performed in collaboration with universities in the region.
The DFG Priority Program “Regional Sea Level Change and Society” involves scientists, engineers and social scientists from universities spread all over Germany, and the project is being coordinated by the University of Hamburg. The shared aim over the next six years is to better understand regional changes of sea levels and the subsequent effects on society. Altogether, over the next three years the German Research Foundation is funding the new Priority Program in an amount of around six million euros. The first funding period will end in June 2019.
