Faculty of Production Engineering Drives Digitalization Forward

The Faculty of Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering & Process Engineering at the university is pushing ahead with its digitalization. In doing so, it is receiving welcome support: the Forum for Digitalization in Higher Education has now selected the faculty for targeted expert advice.

The digitalization of degree content, but also of the organization of studies, has gained considerable speed as a result of the corona pandemic. Online teaching formats have been set up and perfected within a very short time – but perfect is the enemy of good, and there is always something left to optimize. The Faculty of Production Engineering – Mechanical and Process Engineering (faculty 4) will now do just that with the help of proven experts. An application to the Forum for Digitalization in Higher Education (HFD) of the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) was successful: The University of Bremen with faculty 4 and the Technische Universität Berlin have now been selected by a jury from among numerous applicants to receive special funding.

"The peer-to-peer consulting provided by the Forum for Digitalization in Higher Education is an extremely welcome support for us. Thanks to the external guidance, we will be able to develop our recently intensified path toward efficient digital solutions suitable for everyday use in an even more targeted manner," says the dean of studies, Professor Dr.-Ing. Maren Petersen, who is pleased with the positive decision in favor of her faculty.

Since 2021, the Forum for Digitalization in Higher Education has been offering "peer-to-peer faculty consulting," a new consulting program with an annually changing subject focus. In the first round, two business and economics faculties benefited, and now it's mechanical engineering's turn.

Intensive year-long process to support the digitalization

In the summer, the Faculty of Production Engineering will begin an intensive, year-long process to support the digitalization of teaching and learning. The focus will be on the further development of strategic concepts and their translation into appropriate measures. The specific challenges of the faculty are to be addressed in a structured manner, without losing sight of university-wide goals.

The process is based on the tried-and-tested concept of peer-to-peer strategy consulting, which is being offered for the sixth time this year. At the heart of the consulting program is the involvement of "peers," selected experts from the German higher education landscape. They now also advise faculties on an equal footing. Additionally, there are exchange formats between the participating faculties. The process concludes with transfer offers for the entire subject field.

The Faculty of Production Engineering – Mechanical Engineering & Process Engineering at the University of Bremen focuses its research and development on holistic and sustainable solutions for tomorrow's energy, production, and mobility. The faculty has a total of nine degree programs with 1,900 students. Teaching and research is conducted on future-oriented technologies for materials production and refinement, material modification and component manufacturing, as well as on processes that protect the environment and conserve resources.

Founded in 2014, the Forum for Digitalization in Higher Education is a joint initiative of the Stifterverband, the CHE Centre for Higher Education, and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
