The quality of teaching is a central hallmark of top-tier universities. The award is intended to highlight the outstanding importance of university teaching for the research and academic landscape, while at the same time creating a career-relevant incentive to engage even more strongly in higher education teaching and to promote it beyond one’s own sphere of influence.
The prize is given for outstanding and innovative achievements in structure development, teaching, and assessment, as well as for advising and supporting students at a higher education institution in Bremen. It is endowed with a total of 40,000 euros and is awarded in two categories. The state of Bremen provides a prize of 25,000 euros in the “Curricular Innovations and Team-Teaching” category and a prize of 15,000 euros in the “Teaching and Skills Transfer” category. The award from the senator for Environment, Climate, and Science is presented every two years.
Who Can Apply?
The call for entries for the award in the Curricular Innovations and Team-Teaching category is open exclusively to working groups and organizational units at Bremen's four state universities. The call for entries for the award in the Teaching and Skills Transfer category is open exclusively to individual teaching staff members at Bremen's four state universities.
How Is the Decision Made?
The working group, organizational units, or individuals apply directly to the Senator for the Environment, Climate, and Science. When submitting the application documents, it must be specified whether it is an individual or a working group application. There is no preliminary selection of applications by the respective university management.
The submitted applications are reviewed and assessed by a jury appointed by the Senator for the Environment, Climate, and Science. The jury consists of the respective university management teams and students from the universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven, external evaluators, and a representative of the Senator for the Environment, Climate, and Science. Active jury members are not eligible to apply for the Bremen Higher Education Teaching Award and former committee members may not apply for the award for two years after leaving the committee.
