LEDs for the Future: “Made in Bremen”

The University of Bremen is an award winner in the German-wide innovation competition “365 Locations in the Land of Ideas” – once again! This time the University received acclaim for a project entitled “NaZOLED – LEDs made from zinc oxide-nanowires”. Researchers at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the University of Bremen have developed a technique for the cost-efficient and non-toxic manufacture of LED diodes.

Today, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are all around us; in traffic lights and automobile headlamps, for instance. They are made from ultrafine zinc oxide nanowires. The award-winning manufacturing process is very simple and it enables LEDs to be produced more cheaply, in large quantities, and completely free of toxic materials or byproducts. On Tuesday 28th June, Dr. Martin Klinkhammer from the Deutsche Bank in Bremen officially declared the innovative technique to be a “Selected Location 2011”. The University of Bremen is thus among the 365 award winners to receive the distinction within the context of a location initiative called “Germany – Land of Ideas”. This year, as every year, the Deutsche Bank under the patronage of the President of Germany selects innovative projects for special acclaim.

The project “NaZOLED – LEDs made from zinc oxide nanowires” was among the 2,600 applications which were evaluated by an independent jury. Its sustainable idea was deemed representative for Germany as the “Land of Ideas”. To be an award winner in the competition ‘365 Locations in the Land of Ideas’ is the hallmark of creativity and sustainable innovation. Dr. Martin Klinkhammer explained the commitment of the Deutsche Bank by saying: “With their great dedication and passion, the ‘Selected Locations’ make the innovative strength of Germany more visible and trigger impulses for today and tomorrow”.
