Mathematical Olympiad: Award Ceremony of the Bremen’s Best

A total of 169 schoolchildren from Bremen and Bremerhaven took part in the final round of the mathematical olympiad state competition at the end of February. The best performers will be honored at the University of Bremen on Friday, March 8, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

The participants qualified for the competition in the first round, which was held in November 2018 and had a total of 1,400 contenders. The youngest participants were from the third grade, while the eldest were about to graduate from high school – some of whom were competing for the eighth time. The best performers in the competition will be honored on Friday, March 8, 2019. A total of 13 first prizes, 22 second prizes, and 28 third prizes will be awarded. The three very best schoolchildren will be awarded with a medal. In addition, the ten schoolchildren that make up the Bremen team representing the federal state in the national round will be introduced. The national round will take place in Chemnitz on May 12 to 15, 2019.

Outstanding Performance from Brothers

With a completely flawless solution, exceptional schoolchild Simon Dubischar performed outstandingly. Simon had already attracted attention in recent years for his excellent achievements in mathematics competitions throughout Germany. He is currently training for the German team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. This year is the last time that Simon will participate as he is now graduating from high school. But there is a possible successor also from the Dubischar family. Simon’s brother Jakob was the best performer in his class in the fifth grade and it was only through carelessness that he missed out on a top performance like that of his brother.

Eighth-Grade Example Task

The 30 winners of a state round in the mathematical olympiad will be awarded with noncash prizes provided by a sponsor. There are three different types of prize available and are worth 30 euros, 24 euros, or 18 euros. At least one of each type of prize shall be awarded and each winner shall receive exactly one prize.
Determine how many combination possibilities there are if the sponsor provides exactly 600 euros for these prizes and this amount is to be spent in full. Solution: There are four combination possibilities (order: 30 euros, 24 euros, 18 euros): (1, 8, 21); (2, 6, 22); (3, 4, 23); and (4, 2, 24).

For Editorial Offices: The award ceremony will take place on Friday, March 8, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. at the University of Bremen, building MZH (multifunctional building), room 1400 (first floor). Media representatives are cordially invited to the photo session at 4:15 p.m. Registration is requested.
