University of Bremen: 2025 Diversity- Equity- & Inclusion-Week

From May 19 to 23, the university is hosting its sixth Diversity- Equity- & Inclusion-Week. Under the motto “Take Care – Connecting through Change,” the event will focus on topics related to care work, diversity, and discrimination. The event is being organized by the Equal Opportunities Office.

A variety of interactive online formats – from lectures and discussion panels to workshops – will provide space for reflection, discussion, and networking. Experts will shed light on topics such as coping with times of crisis, (in)visible obstacles in everyday university life, neurodiverse perspectives, care responsibilities in academia, and experiences of intersectional discrimination.

Thematic areas of focus during the week include a lecture on the role of neurodiversity in everyday life with psychologist Mirjam Puppe and a workshop with education scientist Professor Klaus-Peter Hufer on strategies for dealing with populist rhetoric.

Personal perspectives will also be shared, for example in a testimony by marine scientist Dr. Nancy Odour on balancing motherhood, research, and her career in an international context. Social scientist Dr. Saumya Pant will address the question of whether it is ever possible to strike a balance between family care work and academic activity.

In addition, social worker Marie Kottwitz will discuss classism-critical perspectives on universities, while pediatric nurse Julia Kerckhoff-Panzram will prepare participants for handling pediatric emergencies in a practical online session.

The digital program is complemented by two special in-person events: From May 19 to 23, the student initiative BaS – Barrierearmes Studieren (Barrier-Free Studying) will present the exhibition “Gallery Walk: Invisible Barriers” in the GW2 building (mezzanine level, Boulevard entrance), offering insights into barriers in everyday student life. In addition, an open space for BIPoC employees at the University of Bremen invites them to exchange ideas and empower each other (May 21, in person, Unicom 2, Oxford House).

The events are open to everyone, free of charge, and will take place mainly online and in multiple languages (German / English). This Diversity- Equity- & Inclusion-Week is being organized in cooperation with “Carat – caring all together”!
