Ernst Müller-Scheeßel (1863-1936) was a prominent artist, designer, founder of the “Bremer Künstlerbund,” and professor at the School of Applied Arts, which became the Nordic Academy of Fine Arts in Bremen. He was a central figure in the cultural-political network of northwestern Germany. He also became widely known as the painter and designer of the Roselius House on Böttcherstraße in Bremen. His estate is held at the State and University Library of Bremen, and consists of approximately 5,500 letters, as well as photographs, posters, and various documents, which together form an archive of Ernst Müller-Scheeßel’s extensive body of work.
The funding from the VGH Foundation will support detailed, in-depth cataloging of the estate’s materials, and their entry into the central estate database Kalliope. This will make the estate visible and searchable worldwide for researchers and other interested parties. “The complete cataloging of Ernst Müller-Scheeßel’s estate signifies the creation of new opportunities for regional cultural history, and the advancement of our work in the artist’s birthplace,” says Dr. Matthias Loeber, Director of the Scheeßel Local History Museum. “The cross-sector collaboration between the library and the museum allows us to pool our expertise,” adds Dr. Maria Hermes-Wladarsch, Head of Historical Collections at SuUB Bremen. Following the cataloging phase, an exhibit will be presented at both SuUB Bremen and the Scheeßel Local History Museum.
