University of Bremen Starts into the Winter Semester with 5,500 New Students

Some 5,500 new students will get off to a rousing start to their studies at the University of Bremen in winter semester 2015/16 with a mix of info events, parties, and a festive kickoff assembly held in the Goethe Theater. The ERSTI-PORTAL [freshers’ portal; in German only] contains lots of useful information for people new to the university: There you will find tips on how to compile a timetable, explanations of important terms and abbreviations, a to-do check list, and details of important contact persons.

Of the 5,500 new students, about 4,000 are undergrads on Bachelor programs and law studies, and 1,500 will be studying for their Master’s. Stephan Determann from the Student Advisory Service points out: “This year, too, the month of October will be under the sign of orientation. Every fourth student of the University will be a fresher, and there will accordingly be lots of questions about how to proceed.”

O-Week: Infos, student engagement, and fresher party

In its September Academy the University of Bremen offers prep courses for a number of different subjects.  These are designed to facilitate a smooth start to studies. The official kickoff for the traditional Orientation Week, O-Week for short, is on October 5, 2015. The different fields represented at the University of Bremen will be holding introductory events and lectures to provide freshers with information on study programs and their organization. Students and members of faculty will be on hand to answer freshers’ questions. Several student self-governance committees (Stugas) – elected student representatives in the individual departments – will be there to introduce themselves. They are also organizing fresher parties during O-Week. Introductory and info events are also offered by the Allgemeiner Studierendenausschuss (AStA) [Student union] and other student groups. Guided tours of the campus are part of the program, too. And the work group AG Handicap is offering special tours for students with disabilities.

Information Exchange on October 8

Some of the University’s most important institutions will present themselves during the Information Exchange on Thursday October 8, 2015, from 10.00 till 14.00 hours in building GW2. Beside the International Office, the Studierwerkstatt [Study workshop], and the Student Advisory Service, you will also be able to learn more about the Career Center, the Center for Foreign Languages, and many other  university facilities. Parallel to the Information Exchange there are also events on topics like studying abroad, General Studies, University Sport, and the Stud.IP learning platform.

Festive kickoff assembly in Theater am Goetheplatz

Once again this year the University of Bremen invites all its new students and their families to attend a festive kickoff assembly in Theater am Goetheplatz (Ostertorsteinweg). On Friday, October 23, 2015, guests will be treated to a colorful evening show held under the motto "MOIN" comprising a mix of orchestra and rock music, hip-hop, dance, theater and film. Following this, the more hardy participants are invited to an after-show party at Moments, where they can party and dance into the early morning (Vor dem Steintor 65, 28203 Bremen). Tickets can be bought during O-Week in the Mensa dining hall for 2 euros (plus 5 euros for the after-show party).
