The network held the YERUN 10th Anniversary Conference on “Looking Ahead, Growing Together.” Guests from academia, politics, and the community discussed ideas about the future of collaboration in European higher education.
The event began with a panel discussion about the competitiveness of the European research landscape. Participants included Maria Leptin, president of the European research committee.
Topics Ranging from Research Careers to European Competitiveness
Parallel panels examined the role of research and innovation for Europe’s development as well as the international competitiveness of the European higher education system. The young universities’ strong research was also emphasized. Several researchers from YERUN universities gave short presentations on their research topics and the impact these have on society, among them was the Bremen astrobiologist Cyprien Verseux.
Afternoon panels were held to discuss how artificial intelligence can make international research cooperation possible, and how higher education institutions can support academic careers. The university was represented by Julia Sievers, head of Academic Affairs (Administrative Department 01).
The conference ended with a keynote address by Christina Egelund, the Danish Minister for Higher Education and Science, who gave an outlook of the upcoming Danish EU Council Presidency.
The conference allowed YERUN to display its entire range of impact, and made it clear that YERUN is the voice for these young, research-oriented universities, and has a say in Brussels.
“Over the next ten years I hope that this very powerful community will continue to strengthen its role as the collective voice of young universities in Europe. By fostering collaboration, defending academic freedom and tackling global challenges YERUN can continue to drive innovation and positive change – together,” says Dr. Mandy Boehnke, Vice President for International Affairs, Academic Qualification, and Diversity.
