Important linguistic expert meeting at the university

Around 500 linguists are expected at the University of Bremen from March 6 to 8, 2019, for the 41st Annual Conference of the German Linguistic Society. It is one of the largest linguistic conferences in Europe.

The conference in the Hanseatic city will take place under the motto “Contrast and Opposition.” The experts will discuss linguistic issues in 16 thematically specialized working groups: Which oppositions are coded in principle by language systems? Which linguistic usage patterns contrast with which alternatives? Which distinctions can people make with linguistic signals and which can they not?

“Basically, linguistics is always concerned with the core task of searching for commonalities in the supposed confusion of several thousand languages, in other words discovering ‘unity in diversity,’” says Professor Thomas Stolz. The University of Bremen university lecturer organizes the important meeting with a team. There is always a great need for discussion in this very complex subject – for example, about the still relatively young research field of colonial linguistics, which is a new research program developed at the University of Bremen.

Teacher Information Day on March 5

As part of the framework program of the event, there will be the Teacher Information Day on Tuesday, March 5. This public event is aimed at teachers who want to find out about the latest information in linguistics and language teaching: What role does language (and do language barriers) play today? Find out more about the content online at www.dgfs2019.uni-bremen.de/lehramtsinitiative.

One of the Largest Linguistic Societies in Europe

The German Linguistic Society (DGfS) is one of the largest linguistic societies in Europe with well over a thousand members. It represents the interests of linguists in Germany and is committed to researching human language in all its facets.

The conference is open to the public, but a conference fee must be paid. You can find out more about this on the DfGS website. The meeting is supported by the sponsor Hansa-Flex.
