Sunday Opening of the SuUB: First Phase Was Successful

For the first time, the headquarters of the Bremen State and University Library (SuUB) was also open on six weekends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The offer was very well received. Up to 1,200 visitors came on Sundays.

The special action took place between 12 January and 17 February 2019. During the extended opening hours, the library was exclusively available as a study environment. Library services were not offered. At the entrance, comments could be left on a “feedback wall.” This possibility of working in the library was used intensively. Especially students in exam stress, bachelor’s and master’s candidates as well as doctoral students welcomed the opportunity to study in the library in peace on Sundays. Many expressed the hope that the offer would soon become more regular. Only a few regretted that books could not be borrowed and returned.

"A Long-Established Practice at Many German University Libraries.”

Dr. Martin Mehrtens, the Director of Finance and Administration of the University, is pleased that the implementation of the long-planned project has finally become possible: “Being open on Sundays has been a long-established practice at many German university libraries. The Bremen State and University Library can finally also see how the Sunday opening times are accepted by visitors. The first test phase shows that the demand definitely exists in Bremen as well.”

Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, President of the University, warmly welcomes the project: “Although the temporary Sunday opening could hardly be advertised, the number of visitors on Sundays skyrocketed from zero to over a thousand – a clear result. For the university, I hope that the opening hours will be extended permanently after the end of the project in 2020. The University of Bremen wants to constantly improve the learning and study conditions it offers – and opening the library on Sundays contributes to this.”

Project To Be Continued

The two-year project is set to continue in June. During this time, the next major examination phase will take place. Two further project periods will follow in 2020. Once the overall evaluation has been completed, a decision will be made on the future opening hours of the Bremen State and University Library.
