New joint Research Training Group funded by the DFG

Great success for a joint project of Jacobs University and the University of Bremen: The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved funding for a Research Training Group at the jointly operated Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS).

Within the framework of the research and qualification program, 14 young academics in the disciplines of psychology, sociology and political science can earn their doctorates. The first seven doctoral candidates will start their training in 2020, with a second group expected to follow in 2021. The DFG will finance the research training group with around three million euros over a period of four and a half years.

"I am pleased that the joint proposal of the University of Bremen and Jacobs University has convinced the German Research Foundation (DFG). I‘d like to warmly congratulate all the participating researchers. The new Research Training Group will further strengthen graduate education at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences," emphasized Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, president of the University of Bremen.

The study and research program will focus on researching the interactions between individuals and their social environment. Whether culture, gender, social class or family: all human beings are exposed to systematic influences that shape them and their actions. These in turn have an impact on the social relationships and conditions in which everyone moves, and will in the long-term lead to social changes.

In the English-medium research training program entitled "The Social Dynamics of the Self", doctoral students from various social sciences will analyze these dynamic interactions and their consequences based on seven subject areas, including migration. What role does the self-image play in migration in a more collectivist compared to an individualist culture? The handling of stress, how people can find a good balance between demands in their work and private lives, and what consequences early retirement has on a person's self-image are other thematic complexes.

The idea to apply for the study and research program was born in the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), to which it is also assigned. The BIGSSS is a joint institution of the Jacobs University and the University of Bremen, in which 90 international doctoral students are individually supervised and complete a structured curriculum. Dr. Ulrich Kühnen, Professor of Psychology at Jacobs University, is the spokesperson for the new research training program. Co-speaker is Sonja Drobnic, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology at the University of Bremen.
