President Re-Elected as HRK Vice President

Professor Bernd Scholz-Reiter, President of the University of Bremen, has been re-elected Vice President of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). His focus continues to be on international affairs. He has been in office since December 2018.

The re-election for a new term in office, which will officially begin on December 1, 2021, took place at the HRK General Assembly on November 16, 2021.
In total, three new members were elected as members of the HRK Executive Board and four were confirmed in their offices. The German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) is the association of public and government-recognized universities in Germany. The member institutions are represented in the HRK by their executive boards and rectorates.

Working Towards University Autonomy and Academic Freedom Worldwide

As Vice President for International Affairs of the HRK, Professor Scholz-Reiter represents the interests of German universities internationally and supports its members in their internationalization process.
Academic freedom and the protection thereof continue to form the core of his focus during his third term in office. “We have seen how researchers are inhibited in their academic freedom in many countries and that they are threatened, fired, or persecuted - whether this be in Belarus, Turkey, Iran, or Afghanistan. Our support is needed everywhere where students and researchers can no longer freely do their jobs. As the HRK, we stand for worldwide academic freedom and university autonomy,” states Scholz-Reiter.
