Product quality and properties, as well as potential applications for biochar produced from food waste

The aim of the project is to treat food waste and biological sewage sludge from aerobic wastewater treatment on board large passenger and cruise ships using hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC), which is significantly less energy-intensive than established waste incineration processes and results in considerably lower CO₂ and exhaust gas emissions. The focus lies on the systematic investigation of how process parameters in the hydrothermal production of biochar from food waste influence product quality and properties, as well as the identification of potential applications, such as use as a soil improver, as a sorbent in wastewater treatment or as an energy source (secondary fuel).
